PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Mire drops 24 as Sandpoint girls catch fire in win over Moscow

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 11 hours AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 3, 2025 2:45 PM

GIRLS

Sandpoint 62, Moscow 40

SANDPOINT — When Brecken Mire is in the zone, it's hard to stop her, and Moscow had no answers.

The junior locked in for a game-high 24 points, laced three of the team's nine three-pointers, and registered a team-high five assists as the Lady Bulldogs stormed to a 5A Inland Empire League victory over the Lady Bears — the league opener for both teams — at Les Rogers Court on Tuesday night.

"She's been waiting for that breakout game and to get into a rhythm — I've felt that as a player too in regards to high pressure and expectations," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said of Mire. "I think she really let the game come to her tonight as she found her shots and found her teammates. She played a really well-rounded game."

Junior Jordyn Tomco added 11 points, including two three-pointers, a team-high six rebounds and a team-high four steals while junior Carly Laybourne netted eight points, including two three-pointers of her own, as the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 41-20 lead before the halftime break.

Junior Livia Driggs chipped in six points and two assists, senior Jetta Thaete four points and five rebounds for Sandpoint in the winning effort. Coach Schoening noted that her team had just nine turnovers, which was surely a difference maker in the outcome, as was the rebounding margin that Sandpoint won by a tally of 31-28 despite eight offensive boards by Moscow.

"Anything under 10 (turnovers) is something to be excited about, especially when were playing more up-tempo and it's easy to get frantic," coach Schoening said. "Early on, the girls were really feeling themselves and were taking great shots, as opposed to just good shots. They moved the ball well, found the hot hand, and kept building off each other."

Sophomore Willow Betz buried a three-pointer and came away with three steals, senior Jasmin Laing had a three-pointer and two blocks for Sandpoint (3-0), which will look to keep their winning streak alive when they travel to University High of Spokane on Friday night.
