SANDPOINT — A pretrial hearing involving a Moyie Springs man charged in connection with a fatal crash on Highway 95 has been postponed to a later date due to pending pretrial motions and additional discovery.

Rick Quinton Gross, 62, faces three felony counts of aggravated reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident that occurred over a year ago.

During a time set aside for a pretrial conference, defense attorney Craig Zanetti requested the continuance due to private inspectors’ inability to locate a vehicle that was involved in the fatal crash.

Gross appeared for the hearing out of custody after posting a $250,000 bond Jan. 9.

Gross’ charges originated from a Nov. 22 fatal crash that killed 5-year-old Amelia Carolla and critically injured three others — her mother, Amanda, brother Patrick and family friend Anna Andreykovets — all of whom were in a northbound vehicle in the opposing lane.

According to court documents, Gross allegedly struck the other vehicle head-on as he attempted to pass another southbound driver. According to court reports, witnesses told Idaho State Police troopers that Gross seemed to be in a hurry and was seen passing several other vehicles in a reckless matter.

“A family is forever impacted by Mr. Gross’ alleged actions. Hopefully, his arrest and prosecution will provide some closure for the victim’s family,” said United States Marshal Brent Bunn. “The District of Idaho is proud to assist our state and local partners with the arrest of Mr. Gross and helping to keep our communities safe.”

A status conference has been set in the case for Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 2:30 p.m. At the conference, a pretrial and trial date is expected to be scheduled.
