James Kress is the new minister of the Unity Center of Spiritual Growth. Kress takes over for Dennis Ashley, who recently retired. Kress, a longtime Seattle area resident, brings over three decades of ministerial experience to the position.

Kress was raised in the Catholic tradition and holds degrees from the University of Washington, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, and Emerson Theological Institute.

He served 28 years as a pastor in two conservative evangelical churches, followed by six years as a staff minister at the Center for Spiritual Living in Seattle. His journey reflects a rich tapestry of spiritual traditions and a deepening commitment to inclusive, contemplative practice.

“I consider myself essentially Christian, but not exclusively Christian,” Kress said. “I think there’s a difference between having faith in Jesus and having the faith of Jesus. The former is a mental assent. The latter is a gift of grace.”

He approaches scripture with reverence and reflection.

“To read the Bible literally is to read it seriously, honestly, humbly and reflectively,” he explained. “There’s a difference between seeking the truth of a story and the truth in the story.”

Unity Center of Spiritual Growth’s mission is to be a spiritual community that lives love and uplifts lives. Kress resonates deeply with this vision.

“Each faith tradition has a distinct beauty,” he said. “It’s like an orchestra, each instrument unique, yet capable of creating a symphony of love when played in harmony.”

Rev. Kress invites all seekers to join the Unity community.

“Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.”
