SPOKANE— Junior Taren Bateman dominated, scoring 28 points, junior Nolie Hiatt scored 14 and Bonners Ferry girls basketball shot 44% from the field to claim a 23-point win over the East Valley Knights.

The Badgers will next play at Moscow on Friday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Freshman Jaycee Bateman scored a career high 11 points and senior Hallie Thomson managed to get five offensive rebounds as the Badgers won their first road game of the season to move to 1-2.

It was a season best game for Hiatt, who added to her 14 points with a team-high seven rebounds and three assists.

Freshmen Clementine Warden, Brooklyn Hubbard and sophomore Kayle Petersen played their first minutes of the season.

The first quarter was a struggle for the Badgers, as they trailed by a point to end it down 16-15.However, Bonners Ferry went on a 17-8 run in the second quarter to finish the first half in the lead by a score of 32-24 and from that point on, the Badgers didn’t look back. The third quarter was an offensive showcase for the team as the Badgers put up 24 points and held Moscow to 11. In the fourth quarter, the Badgers added 13 points to their total while holding Moscow to 11.

Head coach Tomi Bateman said she felt that adjustments the team made throughout the game were crucial to the win.

“Our first half was rough and we talked about it,” Bateman said. “I felt like we came back in the second half and just poured it on and showed how we can play. We played smarter and calmer, which is one of my big goals. I think that made the difference.”

Taren Bateman was the game’s best player statistically. Her 28 points were off 55% shooting, including making 4 of her 6 three-point attempts. She also contributed five rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks in an all-round stellar performance.

Coach Tomi Bateman said she was impressed with how Taren Bateman handled herself on the court.

“The thing that was fun for me to watch is she was just really calm out there, calling out plays, being patient and just letting things develop and come to her,” Bateman said.

Bateman added that Hiatt and Thomson’s effort on the boards were great to see.

“It was awesome,” Bateman said of the rebounding. “It felt like in the first half we were just getting out rebounded and we talked about it at halftime. Those two did a great job getting after the ball. It was huge.”
