SPOKANE VALLEY — Minus four of their projected starters due to injury, the visiting Coeur d’Alene Vikings fell 60-51 to the University Titans in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Junior Davis Whittaker scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half for Coeur d’Alene, which trailed 41-19 at halftime.

“We didn't play well at the beginning; a lot of the boys told me they were nervous,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss, in his first year back on the Viking bench after coaching Coeur d’Alene from 2004-13. “In the second half they played harder and felt more comfortable. Davis Whittaker was a pleasant surprise.”

Guard Caden Symons, a second-team all-Idaho selection who has signed with Evansville, could return soon from a broken collarbone suffered during football season.

Junior point guard Ben Murray has opted for ankle tendon surgery after being injured during football season, and will miss the basketball season. So will junior post Evan Robertson, who suffered a torn ACL pitching this summer.

And junior forward Collin Wright, out with a strained MCL, hopes to resume practice next week, Leiss said.

“We’re going to eventually be OK, but it was tough sledding,” Leiss said of Wednesday’s game.

Brady Bell scored 20 of his 25 points in the first half for University

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Moscow on Saturday.

MEAD — On an emotional night, with everything going their way early, the Timberwolves got out to a great start.

They just didn’t have quite enough to get to the finish line.

Junior Jordan Carlson had 26 points, senior Josh Watson 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, but a 31-point night by Colorado State signee Jaden Ghoreishi lifted the Wildcats to the nonleague win.

“It just kind of got away from us in overtime,” said Lake City coach James Anderson, whose team led 28-17 at halftime, but was outscored 13-2 in overtime. “Jaden, he’s a lot to guard and they got out and got going in overtime.”

It was the first game for Mt. Spokane, who was without Brody Three Stars, who is recovering from injuries suffered in an accident with an impaired driver on Nov. 22.

“It was an emotional night for them, and for us,” Anderson said.

Lake City (1-1) hosts Rocky Mountain of Meridian on Friday.

“The guys played hard and fought all the way to the end,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “They hit three 3s to start the fourth, and that really put us in a hole. We were focused on trying to keep Carrel out of the paint and did a great job in the first half, but he is a good player and they put him good opportunities in the second half.”
