Last season: 24-1 (2-0 in 4A IML), 4A State Champions

Players: Ty Schrock, jr.; Conrad Hiatt, sr.; Riley Beggerly, jr.; Landon Hart, jr.; Peyton Hinthorn, jr.; Brydin Weymer, fr.; Risten Allred, jr.; Myles Stanger, sr.; Sulay Abubakari, sr.; Micah Thomson, sr.; Jameson Kissee, jr.

Coaches: Greg Kissee, head coach, first year; Brion Poston, assistant coach; Shane Banning, head junior varsity coach, assistant coach to varsity and c teams; Jesse Banning, head C team coach, assistant coach to varsity and junior varsity teams.

Departures to graduation: Eli Blackmore, Brody Rice, Asher Williams, Thomas Bateman, Ivaan Cartwright

Outlook: Greg Kissee spent last season as an assistant coach on the Bonners Ferry boys basketball team. Now, he is the head coach, following the departure of successful head coach Nathan Williams, who won back-to-back state championships to close out his Badgers tenure.

Bonners Ferry will have significant changes to the team, as five players from last season have graduated. However, there is significant talent on a Badgers team that will look to make it three state championships out of three.

Junior Peyton Hinthorn, someone that coach Kissee called “a very good, well rounded basketball player”, is poised to have an impressive season after scoring 28 points against East Valley.

The same goes for 6 feet 7 inches tall senior Sulay Abubakari, who scored 11 points and collected nine rebounds in their opener against Sandpoint. He will be one of the leaders on this Badgers team.

Senior Micah Thomson, a cross-country runner in the fall, will look to make an impact in the paint as one of the team’s best rebounders and shot blockers.

Junior Jameson Kissee looks set for a breakout season on both sides of the ball. He led off the season as the team’s high scorer against Sandpoint with twelve points, which included three three-pointers and three steals.

Junior Ty Schrock, a guard who Kissee called “a tough defensive player”, added six points and six rebounds against Sandpoint. Shrock, Abubakari and Hinthorn were on the roster for both state championships.

Freshman Brydin Weymer is the team’s only underclassmen.

Several players were stars in the fall, as Abubakari, Hiatt and Allred earned 4A IML All-League honors in basketball. Hinthorn was All-League in soccer.

League opponents Timberlake are on the schedule for Jan. 17 at home and Feb. 17 at Timberlake. A potentially difficult game on the schedule is Lewiston, a team that finished last year’s season ranked 19 in Idaho, with a 20-6 record.

Coach’s comments:

“I want to watch the team grow and get better,” Kissee said. “We’re definitely trying to get back to state and have a great year this year.”

“We do have a lot of new faces on the varsity team this year. We are just looking to play as a team and get better every week. It’s a great group of kids and they play with a lot of heart.”

On the team’s main strengths this season:

“Our main strength this year will be our defense,” Kissee said. “We should be a pretty tough team.”

“I’m just excited to be the head coach for Bonners Ferry and we’re going to try to keep Badger basketball tough, just like it has been the last few years.”
