PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: See you again in February? .. Coeur d'Alene falls to Eagle in matchup of state tournament teams from last year
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 hour, 54 minutes AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — It’s not how you start, but how you finish, reminded Coeur d'Alene High girls basketball coach Stacy Boyd.
Thursday just wasn’t the Coeur d’Alene Vikings' night.
Junior Brookeslee Colvin scored a team-high 26 points for the Vikings, but the hosts were outscored 58-37 in the final three quarters of a 75-56 loss to the Eagle Mustangs at Viking Court.
Eagle was picked to finish first in the 13-team 6A Southern Idaho Conference by the league's coaches. Coeur d'Alene reached the state semifinals, then lost in the third-place game.
“We came out strong,” Boyd said. “We got a bit of a lead and we had momentum, but just didn’t do enough to get it done. They outrebounded us and were more physical than us, so they kind of took us out of our identity that we’ve been focused on and been doing the last couple of weeks.”
Coeur d’Alene (4-1) last played on Nov. 25, a 71-46 win at Lewiston.
“We’re going to take it one game at a time like we always do,” Boyd said. “I told the girls it’s not how we start, but how we finish. It’s going to be one of those teams that we’ll be looking forward to seeing them down the road. Hopefully things change when we see them again.”
Eagle (4-0) beat Madison of Rexburg 56-30 in its last game on Nov. 21.
“I thought they did a good job of responding,” fifth-year Eagle coach Jeremy Munroe said of his team. “Coeur d’Alene’s a good team and we’ll probably see them again at state. These are games we need. We haven’t played in two weeks, and this was our first road game. It’s a good test against a really good basketball team. I’m proud of how our girls played. They played together and did a good job today.”
Coeur d’Alene opened the season with three straight games in the Boise area Nov. 20-22.
“We got to watch them a couple of weeks ago, and my assistant coaches, they’re the greatest and did a great job of scouting them,” Munroe said. “We saw some things we knew they were going to do. Brookeslee’s a stud, but they’ve got a lot of good players on that team. We knew the shooters could shoot and Brookeslee was going to create and do great things. They present a lot of challenges, and we saw that on film and adapted a bit.”
Eagle travels to Post Falls tonight.
“It’s important to get out on the road and get to see everybody,” Munroe said. “You get to know these other teams and play everyone. For these girls, these are the memories they’ll have and that’s important. As the Louisville coach said last year, ‘You don’t sharpen your teeth by eating Oatmeal.’ You’ve got to go out and play the best teams you can find. We’ve got great teams in our league, but there’s great teams in our state we want to get out and play as well.”
Junior Berkley Jones scored 31 points for Eagle, 15 coming in the second quarter.
Sophomore Lexie Wheeler scored nine points for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Meridian tonight at 7.

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City senior post Abby Smith scored on a layup to tie the game at 53-53 with 17 seconds remaining, but a free throw from Chanel Schureman with .5 seconds remaining to send the Warriors over the Timberwolves at Lake City High.
“Both teams played hard,” said Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team led 40-35 after the third quarter. “They really turned up the pressure on us and we lost the momentum. They did a good job of executing their defensive game plan. We just missed a box-out, and they made a shot to win it. Our kids are learning they’ve got to do the little things to win.”
