COEUR d’ALENE — With just eight games on the season, NIC coach Nathan Covill is still looking for that right mix.
For one night, going smaller seemed to work wonders.
Freshman guard Karsyn Freeman scored a team-high 13 points, sophomore forward Chloe Collin added 12 points for the Cardinals in a win over the Pioneers of Miles City, Mont., at Rolly Williams Court.
“I just felt like we needed to try something different,” said Covill, who opted to start freshman guard Liv Whitemarsh and have another post play a reserve role. “It’s still early and we’re looking for combinations. It really took us a while to get into a rhythm with our substitution patterns, but we wanted to give Liv a chance and see what we could do.”
NIC (3-5) led Miles (8-7) 60-33 after three quarters.
Sophomore Summer Falaefa had nine points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes and Diana Nelson, a freshman from Timberlake High, had eight points and three rebounds for NIC.
“We wanted to give Summer a little more of a rest and didn’t play much in the second half,” Covill said. “We’ve been pleased with the production Diana has given us in the last two games.”
NIC faces Williston State today at 3 p.m.
