PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Rocky night for Lake City
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 weeks, 5 days AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City had seen a zone once in the past two years. On Friday night, the Timberwolves played like it.
Lake City struggled to make shots and create offense against Rocky Mountain’s zone, and the visiting Grizzlies from Meridian led most of the way in a 65-60 victory Friday night at Lake City.
Lake City coach James Anderson said he was excited to play against a zone, but said the zone bothered his team “a decent amount.”
"We felt we were getting the ball to the right spots, and we had a chance to puncture a little bit, but we weren’t aggressive when we had those chances,” Anderson said. “We missed some opportunities in the paint, outside the paint. At some point, you’ve got to make some shots, and it just allowed them to keep extending that zone and bothering us more and more ... we got tight against it, for sure.”
Junior Jordan Carlson scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half for Lake City (1-2). Senior Josh Watson added 20.
“We committed to it (the zone) before the year started,” said third-year Rocky Mountain coach Ivory Williams, whose team was picked to finish eighth in the 6A Southern Idaho Conference. “We’re buying into it, and if the guys believe in it, they can do it.”
Lake City finished with six 3-pointers. Rocky (2-2) hit nine 3s, three by 6-5 senior guard Tanner Sweaney, who totaled 21 points.
The Grizzlies were coming off a 76-61 loss at Post Falls on Thursday.
“Our approach was better,” Williams said of Friday. “Yesterday we walked in there really soft. Post Falls is a very physical basketball team, they punched us in the mouth early and we didn’t respond very well.”
Brock Stevens, a 6-7 senior forward, added 19 points, mostly inside.
“He did a good job backing us down,” Anderson said. “And when we sent doubles, I don’t think we executed what we practiced in our double-team scenarios very well, so when we sent doubles they hurt us. He was a handful, and did a pretty good job getting to where he wanted to go.”
Lake City trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half. The T-Wolves went to the press late, and got within 62-58 when Paxton Winey stole the ball and fed Watson for a basket with just over a half-minute left.
“This is a learning lesson for us,” Anderson said. “We played in that state title game last year, and we had a really good summer, and expectations are reasonably high, so we’re going to get a lot of people’s best shots.”
Lake City plays host to North Central on Tuesday.
