PREP GIRLS WRESTLING: Sandpoint claims seven weight classes, wins season-opening Blizzard tourney
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 week, 1 day AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 8, 2025 1:45 PM
SANDPOINT — Yet again, it was a strong start to the season for the Lady Bulldogs.
Seven wrestlers won their weight classes, which included a down-to-the-wire win by sophomore Vanessa Hood at 140 pounds, and Sandpoint cruised to another season-opening Blizzard Tournament title Saturday at Sandpoint Middle School.
Hood, after winning her opening semifinals match by way of a first-period pin, used a second-round reversal and a takedown with 10 seconds remaining to clutch a 5-4 win by decision in the championship match over Hayden Palmer of Moscow.
Junior Teagan Newsom (145) also posted a 2-0 effort, winning both her matches by pin for a class title while sophomore Summer Birch (120) grabbed a title of her own after a 3-0 effort that included three wins by pin — two of which came in under 30 seconds.
In round robin action, junior Mackenzee Donenfeld (105) won both her matches by pin, as did junior Zxyloh Hull-Johnson (155) and sophomore Ariana Turnbull (170). Senior Lilli Marti (235) also won both of her matches by pin for Sandpoint, which scored 163 points, 37.5 more than runner-up Post Falls.
In bracket action, after winning her first two bouts by way of first-round pin, sophomore Avery Inge (125) added a second-place finish after a valiant effort in the championship match that came down to the last second and ended in a high-scoring 20-18 decision. Sophomores Isabella Symons (120) and Rhaeyln Schedlbauer (115) had one win by pin each and finished with silver medals in their brackets as well.
Junior Izzy Stark (135) went 3-1 with a win via 17-0 technical fall and had two victories by way of first-round pin to take home bronze in the tournament's most challenging bracket for Sandpoint, which will dual Lewiston at home Wednesday before heading to the George Wild Tournament in Kellogg this Friday and Saturday.
