SANDPOINT — A new ministry aims to help individuals and families facing memory loss and dementia.

The goal of the Sandpoint Friendship Station is to provide compassionate support and meaningful companionship to those facing the daily challenge of memory loss, dementia and caregiving, said Lissa “Elissabeth” DeFreitas, one of the program’s founder. The program officially opened its doors of hospitality and welcome at Sandpoint United Methodist Church.

Sandpoint Friendship Station is rooted in kindness and community spirit, DeFreitas said. Its mission is to offer a nurturing, enriching space where guests can enjoy creative, recreational and enriching activities, as well as joy-filled fellowship and gentle care — while giving their caregivers a much-needed time of rest and renewal.

The Sandpoint Friendship Station currently meets one day a week — on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the program, participants will embark on a journey of fellowship, connection, purpose and joy as well, enjoying a nourishing shared meal, organizers said.

This vision to bring forth a local respite ministry in Sandpoint is championed by residents Deni Williamson and Lissa "Elissabeth" Defreitas. Inspired by the belief that "no one should walk the journey of dementia and caregiving alone," Williamson and Defreitas join with the expanding "Respite for All" movement, serving with heart and hope, compassion and purpose. The seeds of this nationwide friendship revolution have emerged in 65 communities across America.

“This ministry is rooted in love,” DeFreitas said. "Let's build a friendship station together, where every life is honored, every caregiver supported, and every heart welcomed.”

Sandpoint Friendship Station is currently welcoming volunteers, caregivers and participants.

Volunteers are asked to share their time, talents, and caring presence. Caregivers and participants will benefit from the organization’s supportive community.

The organization will hold its next four-hour free volunteer training Monday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We welcome individuals with a kind heart and willingness to offer a gift of presence to those living with dementia and memory issues,” Defreitas said.

The organization is offering a brief “all aboard” ministry introduction and overview for local churches and organizations upon request.
