PREP BOYS WRESTLING: Priest River racks up seven top-three finishes to take second at Dick Griswold Memorial

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 9, 2025 3:00 PM

POTLATCH — Led by an undefeated round-robin run by Justin Hopkins at 106 pounds and second-place finishes from Bill Rapier (144) and Darien Ratzlaff (215), the Spartans racked up seven top-three finishes as they opened up the season with a second-place finish out of 17 teams at the Dick Griswold Memorial tournament held Saturday at Potlatch High.

Hopkins won all three of his bouts against opponents from Priest River, Pomeroy and Dayton by way of first-round pin to claim gold — with his pins coming at 38 seconds, 49 seconds and 47 seconds, respectively. One of those opponents, Levi Holbrook, went uncontested at 98 pounds to claim a title of his own. Tadhg McLaimtaig captured first at 113 pounds with two wins by pin as the Spartans swept the tournaments three-lowest weights.

Ratzlaff and Rapier both went 2-1 with pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals to clinch silver medals on the afternoon.

Collecting a third-place finish for Priest River was Liam Pettit (132), who won his opening match by pin, his consolation semifinals match by way of first-round pin, and then the third-place match by a 15-0 technical fall to finish 3-1 overall.

Gaige Johnson (175) and Taylor Dodd (285) both went 3-0 and won individual titles for Bonners Ferry, which finished fifth with 112.5 points.

David Harbison added a fourth-place finish at 126 pounds for the Spartans, which scored 124.5 points, just 6.5 points shy of champion Clearwater Valley.
