Sandpoint’s holiday season will sparkle a little brighter this year as the Allegro Dance Studio brings the timeless magic of "The Nutcracker" to the Panida Theater on Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13. With ticket prices starting at $20, families across the community are invited to experience a beloved classic brought to life by local youth dancers, dedicated coaches, and live orchestra.
This year’s production offers something truly special, Music Conservatory of Sandpoint officials said. On Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., Allegro will present a child-friendly performance that is inclusive to all and honors the studio’s desire to bring the whole community together.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, there will be two performances, the first at 2 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. At the shows, the story will deepen with a rare collaboration as Allegro’s dancers will take the stage alongside the North Idaho Philharmonia, under the direction of maestro Jan Pellant. For many young performers, the chance to dance to live orchestral music is a once-in-a-lifetime moment — an artistic milestone that elevates their training, confidence, and connection to the artform, MCS officials said.
Karin Wedemeyer, MCS founder and executive director, shared her enthusiasm for the partnership.
“An incredible asset for young dancers to work with a live orchestra is an unheard-of experience they will not soon forget," Wedemeyer said.
When asked to partner in this project, “Allegro’s dedication to quality and inclusion align so well with our mission, we were delighted to jump in with music, according to Wedemeyer.
Together, Allegro Dance Studio and the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint champion opportunities that nurture young artists and celebrate the power of collaboration. Their shared commitment ensures that Sandpoint’s children gain access to high-quality training — experiences that build skills, confidence, and lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.
At the heart of this production is Allegro’s Artistic Director, Devyn Vaughan-Jolley, whose journey began in childhood through dance and performance. Vaughan-Jolley brings this ballet to life through her students, reimagining the classic she first “fell in love with.” Her artistic vision — shaped by a lifetime of passion and belief in the power of dance — drives Allegro to be the first studio in the region to introduce this inclusive performance model. Her choreography and commitment to storytelling have opened doors for local dancers who may never have imagined themselves on a stage of this scale. Under her direction, “our studio has grown into a place where talent flourishes, creativity is encouraged, and dreams feel possible.”
As the years pass, Allegro continues to expand its artistic vision, “introducing new and inspiring elements that elevate both our dancers and the audience experience.” To support inclusivity, the studio opens auditions to dancers from the community and surrounding areas, ensuring opportunities remain accessible to all.
In the show's fourth season, MCS welcomes dancers who auditioned from Allegro Dance Studio, Alta Dance Academy, and Gonzaga University. By inviting talent from diverse backgrounds, MCS officials said they continue to grow its artistic family.
With the Panida's rich ambiance as the backdrop and a cast of talented young dancers ready to shine, MCS officials said the production promises to be special.
