PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Howard corrals big-time double-double in Wampus Cats’ first win of season
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 days, 10 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 10, 2025 4:10 PM

CLARK FORK — Senior Owen Howard chalked up a game-high 28 points, all in the first three quarters, hauled in a team-high 14 rebounds and recorded seven steals and four blocks as the Wampus Cats used a fast start to capture a 31-point win over the Badgers' junior varsity squad on Tuesday night at Clark Fork High.
Howard, who also had two assists and a fastbreak dunk on the night, was 12-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Senior Westin Caven contributed 10 points, a team-high seven assists and seven steals of his own for Clark Fork, which built up a 20-3 first-quarter lead and were ahead 27-9 at intermission.
"Great for the team as a unit; everyone got in there," Clark Fork High head coach Stillman Berkeley said. "It was a good gauge for Kyler (Rice) and I to see where each player stands, and what to focus on to improve the crew. Owen was great on the boards and with steals and Westin did great directing traffic and with assists. Overall, a step in a good direction, with many steps to take."
Junior Mateo Cruz fired in seven points, including two 3-pointers, and junior Jesse Yanik, freshman Bode Scarlett and sophomore Ryder Gustafson all nailed three-pointers in the non-league victory for the Wampus Cats, which outscored Bonners Ferry JV 19-4 in the third frame.
Clark Fork (1-1) traveled to Mullan on Wednesday night for another non-league game. Results and recap will be available at a later date.

Tomco lasers in 22 in Lady Bulldogs' win
Sandpoint 58, Timberlake 48
SANDPOINT — Junior Jordyn Tomco drained five three-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points and hauled in seven rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs used a 24-7 third-quarter scoring advantage to down the Lady Tigers in a non-league game held Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.
Junior Brecken Mire posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds and blocked two shots while senior Jetta Thaete, who was 5-for-5 shooting in the team's recent win against University, registered eight points of her own on an efficient 4-for-5 effort from the floor and pulled down five rebounds on the night. Junior Carly Laybourne had five points, including a three-pointer, for the Lady Bulldogs, which led 27-25 at intermission.
Malia Miller had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds and dished out six assists for Timberlake, which is now 2-3 on the season.
"Jordyn (Tomco) catching fire was a huge uplift and the girls just fought hard — all the work with our press is coming together, there's still lapses, but it wears a team down over time," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said. "Malia (Miller) is a really talented basketball player and we knew she was going to be challenging in zone press. She got us a couple times, which comes with it, and she had that run that made it close again in the fourth... we need to be in those games, in crunch time, and continue to learn to play without fouling, finishing on free throws, and all the things that come with that. It was a really good learning game for us."
Junior Jaylah Butler also had a three-pointer for Sandpoint (5-0), which has won five straight to open the season and outrebounded the Lady Tigers 38-28 and assisted on 16 made baskets in the win. The Lady Bulldogs will open up TitleOne Tip-off Classic play at the Mountain American Center in Idaho Falls on Thursday morning with Mountain Home, which is 5-2 so far this year.
