PREP WRESTLING: Trojans take care of Lake City
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 week AGO
POST FALLS — Post Falls had pins at nine weights en route to a 69-15 victory over the Lake City Timberwolves on Thursday at The Arena.
“We’ve just been working on trying to wrestle our match,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “I thought the guys wrestled well. The score might have been lopsided, but (Lake City coach) Corey (Owen) had some guys that were fighting and fighting. We’ve got some tough kids, and they came out and took care of business, but Lake City had some guys that made things difficult.”
Soren Hutchinson (98 pounds), Saul Benzinger (113), Logan Loaiza (120), Ryker Allen (126), Matthew Hamilton (132), Brandon Felix (138), Sawyer Sage (144), Colton Austin (165) and Landon Moore (190) had pins for Post Falls.
“We’ve got some new guys in the lineup, and for them, it was their first match under the spotlight at home,” Zender said. “For guys like Landon, and Saul, who have been stuck behind guys for a few years, to come out and wrestle the way they did was nice to see.
Seniors Josh Macdonald (157 pounds), Tucker Bridwell (175) and James Vincent (215) had pins for Lake City, which is off until the Tri-State Invitational next Friday and Saturday at North Idaho College.
"We wrestled hard, but they’re just a better team than us,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Having those three step up and get wins, no matter who they’re wrestling and to see them compete as hard as they did, that was cool to see.”
Post Falls also defeated Lake City 51-18 in a girls dual earlier in the night.
“We did a little bit of everything tonight,” said Post Falls girls coach Abel De La Rosa, who has coached the past 17 years for the Team Real Life Club team, and 11 years as a Trojan assistant coach before taking over the girls program this season. “It wasn’t one-dimensional. The growth of the girls has gone up. They’re doing everything just like the guys now.”
Post Falls will compete in duals at Toppenish, Wash., on Saturday.
