MERIDIAN — Trailing by around 10 points for much of the second half, the Lake City Timberwolves made a run fueled by defense.

The Timberwolves outscored Ridgeline of Millville, Utah, 16-5 in the fourth quarter and beat the Riverhawks 46-44 in the consolation round in the Platinum Bracket of the Pro Image Sports Winter Classic on Friday at Owyhee High.

Jordan Carlson sank two free throws with 12 seconds left to break a 44-all for Lake City (3-3). Then, the T-Wolves' defense forced a Ridgeline player into a double dribble with .6 seconds left.

“We had a really good fourth quarter defensively; guys stepped up,” Lake City coach James Anderson said.

Carlson scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, and he also finished with six rebounds.

Josh Watson added 11 points and five rebounds. Jace Plummer hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, Jackson Bowman had seven of his nine rebounds on the offensive end, and Paxton Winey had four steals and four assists.

“We weren’t necessarily playing poorly,” Anderson said of the third quarter and early fourth. “The kids kept believing and stayed the course. Ian Williams and Jace gave us a nice lift.

"We didn’t finish a game in the fourth quarter the day before; it felt good to finish this one,” Anderson said.

Cam Earl led Ridgeline (3-3) with 11 points.

Lake City will play JSerra Catholic of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., today at 12:30 p.m. PST at Owyhee to conclude tourney play.

Post Falls 70

Centennial 64

BOISE — Knowing both teams like to get out and go, Post Falls coach Jayson Ulrich turned to his assistant, Joe Bodman, before the game and said, “First team to 80 might win this.”

It looked that way at halftime, tied at 40.

The pace slowed a bit in the second half, and the Trojans made some key plays down the stretch to edge the Patriots.

“We're kinda mirror images of each other,” Ulrich said of the two teams. “It might be one of the top five funnest games I’ve been a part of in high school basketball. The kids played so hard and so well after a tough night last night (a 57-52 loss at Kuna).”

Senior Jaxon Lysne scored 21 points, senior Connor Carver 20 for Post Falls (3-2). Junior Cashton Bodman added 14 points.

“Cashton was huge, Connor was consistent, and Jaxon had some huge baskets when we needed them the most,” Ulrich said.

Ulrich said senior Isaiah Naylor (seven points, seven assists, just two turnovers) provided “dynamic, awesome point guard play.”

Gabe Eddins, a 6-5 senior and the reigning 6A Southern Idaho Conference player of the year, led all scorers with 26 points for Centennial (4-1), but the Trojans held him to three baskets in the second half.

Post Falls plays at Timberline of Boise today at 11 a.m. PST to conclude its run of three games in three days in the Boise area.

“Symons is rounding into shape,” Coeur d’Alene coach said of his senior guard, an Evansville signee in his third game back after suffering a broken collarbone during football season. “His conditioning needs work. He played like a kid going to Evansville.”

Junior Rylan Braga hit four 3-pointers, one in each quarter, for Coeur d’Alene (2-2).

“That was huge,” Leiss said. “We played very hard and defended well.

"Our 2 ½-hour film session last night was critical. Our boys watched, learned and executed better.”

“It was back and forth the entire game,” Post Falls coach Brian Carlson said. “We were up 20-13 in the third quarter and turned it over three straight times and let them back into the game. We did not play very hard in the first half, but the second half we had at least one player on the floor after the ball. Down the stretch, we executed really well.”

Tucker finished with 14 points, junior Jaya Felix 12 for Post Falls (2-8), which hosts Ferris today at 2 p.m.

“Mentally and physically, we’re getting better,” Carlson said. “Overall, we were just really pleased with how we played. Having a full week of practice was excellent for us. We were able to work on some things and implement some things.”
