Shalena's Breakfast on Sunday

The 39th annual Shalena's Breakfast with Santa will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Lake Fire Station, 10728 E. Hauser Lake Road.

The event is in memory of Shalena Mobbs, who was only 2 when she was diagnosed with cancer in 1985, which shortly thereafter claimed her young life. The proceeds from the breakfast support other local families going through the same heartache the Mobbs family endured.

The Breakfast is about more than Shalena's legacy, said Hauser Lake Fire District Captain Gary Mobbs.

"It's about bringing our community together," he said. "Through that, we're able to raise money for a kid with cancer."

After the loss of Shalena, the Mobbs family was supported by their community in much the same way, creating a tradition that has now spanned four decades and touched many local lives.

"What a wonderful thing it was for our family," Mobbs said. "To be able to do this, without a doubt, is awesome."

This year's recipient is 8-year-old Myla of Rathdrum, who is battling cancer.

"Myla's love for horses reflects her fearless spirit and remarkable strength," a flyer said. Even while fighting cancer, "she faces each day with resilience and leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets. With her faith in God and love for family, she shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration."

The Breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. It includes all-you-can-eat sausage, eggs, pancakes, hash browns, waffles, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, and coffee. The suggested donation is $3 each or $15 per family.

There will also be prizes and gift baskets.

How to get there:

Go west on Highway 53 just past Pleasantview Road, turn right on Hauser Lake Road and go 1 ½ miles to the fire station.
