On Saturday, Lincoln County Emergency Operations addressed concerns about the Lower Flower Creek Dam near Libby. A low spot on the earthen embankment was breeched for roughly 12 hours Dec. 11, which resulted in moderate damage to the dam.
"At this time, the Lower Flower Creek Diversion Dam does not appear to be at risk of imminent failure," the agency stated in a press release Saturday morning. "The site will continue to be closely monitored."
If conditions change, the release stated, response teams are prepared to intervene with heavy equipment.
There are no concerns with the larger Flower Creek Dam upstream, the agency state.
Areas potentially affected if the lower dam fails include Flower Creek Road, neighborhoods stretching to Education Way and the center of town including California Avenue and to the west of there as well as near the railroad tracks and along the Kootenai River.
The Memorial Center in Libby is now the location for the Red Cross shelter. As of noon Saurday, two residents had opted to relocate there. Red Cross officials said they expected more people to come in later Saturday.
Residents wishing to relocate were advised to contact 406-293-6295.
Members of David Thompson Search and Rescue were distributing bottled water to people in need. Libby has been under a boil water since Thursday, Dec. 11.
