SANDPOINT — In a special meeting related to the Bonner County Ambulance Service district, county commissioners approved a medical benefits change, symbolizing another step forward in separating itself from the county.
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the ambulance district unanimously approved moving current qualifying employees from Bonner County’s medical benefits to a separate plan for the district under the Idaho Independent Intergovernmental Authority.
III-A will provide benefits for ambulance service district employees starting Feb. 1, 2026, for the remainder of the fiscal year. According to EMS Chief Jeff Lindsey, the district will evaluate the contract in August before renewal consideration in October.
Commissioner Brian Domke noted that the separation of benefits does not negatively impact the county’s medical plan. The district, however, is receiving benefits at a lower cost than if they were to stay with the county. According to Lindsey, the district is expected to save about $20,000 in this budget cycle.
“I'm glad that we can do something to benefit the EMS. I think this is a great win, and I appreciate all the work that's gone into it,” Domke said to end the meeting.
