PREP WRESTLING: Sandpoint, with two champions, takes George Wild tourney

KELLOGG — Sandpoint, with individual champions Tyler Wood (106 pounds) and Zak Wood (126) claimed the team title at the George Wild Tournament at Andrews Gymnasium on Saturday. 

Eli Taylor (150) and William Bomba (285) finished runner-up for the Bulldogs, who finished with 202.5 points. 

Kelby Harvey (144), Zach David (150) and Aiden Yearout (165) claimed titles for St. Maries, which was second with 175 points. 

"I'm very pleased with how our kids wrestled," St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. "Our middleweight classes looked extremely solid led by Kelby, Amado, Aiden and Zach (Sotin). We had some young kids really step up as well. It was a total team effort."

Wyatt Carey (113), Chris Schmidt (157) and Carter Loutzenhiser (175) won titles for Timberlake, which was third with 167 points. 

Micah Miller won at 98 pounds for Coeur d’Alene, which finished sixth with 128.5 points.

Coeur d'Alene claims team title

from Interstate Classic


SPOKANE VALLEY — Freshman Cole Armstrong (126 pounds) and junior Brock Armstrong (190) won titles for Coeur d’Alene, which claimed the Interstate Classic at East Valley High. 

Senior Rocco White (second at 113), sophomore Nash Larsen (second at 120), senior Justus Peregrina (third at 120), junior Colton Rush (fourth at 126), sophomore Logan Nitti (fourth at 150), junior Finn Case (fifth at 150), senior Rylan Peterson (fifth at 215) and junior Dominic Prangley (sixth at 144) also placed for Coeur d’Alene, which finished with 230.5 points. 

“I really liked seeing the hustle and grit out of the guys today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “They’re working hard on the stuff we’re doing in practice and taking onto the mat. They’re not just wrestling to win, but also putting points on the board. You can see an improvement already from last week. Cole wrestled really well and Brock had a really good day. All of the kids wrestled really hard.”

Junior Zach Teal (106 pounds), junior Carson Leonard (120) and junior Kade Knopp (132) won titles for Lakeland, which was second with 219.5 points.

Post Falls wins at 

Wild West Showdown


TOPPENISH, Wash. — Post Falls defeated Hermiston (Ore.) 41-30 in the championship dual of the Wild West Showdown at Toppenish High. 

Post Falls beat East Valley of Yakima 80-0 in the first round, then beat Sunnyside (Wash.) 63-11 in the semifinals. 

Tristan Mendenhall (106 pounds), Ryker Allen (126), Judah Brazle (157), Colton Austin (165), Damion Hamilton (175), Landon Moore (190) and Zane Smith (215) went unbeaten for Post Falls, which competes in the Tri-State Invitational on Friday and Saturday at North Idaho College. 

“We knew that Hermiston had some really tough kids, but didn’t know really what to expect,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “Judah wrestled really well and had to battle through some matches. Colton looked impressive with three pins. We’re going pretty good right now, and I’m excited to see what they can do at Tri-State.” 

Post Falls competes at the Tri-State Invitational on Friday and Saturday at North Idaho College.

Lake City's Kiser wins

at Buckle Classic

LA GRANDE, Ore. — Lake City senior Aspen Kiser beat La Grande’s Kaylynn Smith by a 12-3 major decision to claim the 145-pound championship at the Buckle Classic at La Grande Middle School. 

“She was coming off a loss in the finals in Polson (Owen Invitational) last Saturday and had something to prove to herself,” Lake City coach Nathan DeLeon said. “She’s getting better every week, and that’s all you can ask for. Hopefully she’ll continue to improve and continue to work hard every week.” 

Sophomore Poppy Schenk (third at 140), junior Katie Rippentrop (third at 170) and junior Jordyn McHenry (fifth at 170) also placed for Lake City, which finished eighth with 86 points out of 17 teams. 

“I’m happy with how the girls competed,” DeLeon said. “We’ve got a lot to work on, but I’m excited with how we’re looking at the beginning of the season.” 


Post Falls finishes

second at Cheney tourney

CHENEY, Wash. — Post Falls sophomores Kahli Brown (135 pounds), Maria Thompson (190) and Kassie Voss (235) claimed titles at the Tie Dyes and Takedowns Invitational at Cheney High. 

Junior Vada Hutchinson (second at 115), junior Zoey Braun (second at 190), senior Emma Younger (third at 125), junior Raylee Reynolds (fourth at 140), junior Jasmine Soto-Wilson (fifth at 120), junior Karma Nutter (fifth at 130) and senior Sophia Stewart (fifth at 145) also placed for Post Falls, which finished second with 192.5 points. 

Tournament host Cheney won with 238.5 points.  


Sandpoint claims team title

at George Wild Tournament

KELLOGG — Avery Inge (125 pounds) and Teagan Newsom (145) claimed individual titles for Sandpoint, which claimed the girls team title at the George Wild Tournament at Andrews Gymnasium. 

Sandpoint finished with 142 points. 

Murphee Balich (100), Jaiden DeTienne (105), Avery Whaley (120) and Brooklyn Anderson (235) won titles for Coeur d’Alene, which finished second with 80.5 points. 

Timberlake’s Shelby Garten won the 130-pound title.
