County in flood, high wind watch

A National Weather Service advisory is warning of potential floods and high winds from this afternoon through Wednesday afternoon, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office officials said. 

The advisory is in effect from Dec. 16 through Dec. 17, as excessive rainfall is projected to continue throughout Idaho's five northern counties — Benewah, Bonner, Kootenai, Latah and Shoshone — posing additional risks of flooding in poor drainage and urban areas. 

Excessive runoffs may result in the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying locations, according to the advisory. Individuals are asked to use caution in areas of steep terrain, as rock and mudslides pose a higher risk with the projected rainfall.  

Those living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor the weather forecasts and be prepared to take action should flooding occur.  

Officials also warn residents of southwest winds up to 45 mph, with gusts of up to 60 mph. Isolated gusts up to 70 mph in higher terrain areas may occur. Higher winds may result in downed trees or power lines, with widespread power outages. Saturated soil from previous rainfalls could cause a higher impact of trees and power lines falling.  

According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Pend Oreille’s elevation at Hope is expected to rise an estimated one to two feet due to the upcoming rainfall.
