The Glacier High School speech and debate team secured second place, and Flathead High School third, in Bozeman over the weekend.
Glacier scored 156 points overall to Bozeman’s 294 at the Friday and Saturday tournament. Flathead earned 146 points for the third-place finish.
“Bozeman really had an unbelievable tournament,” said Glacier head coach Greg Adkins. “It was clear early on Monday morning that they were going to run away with the sweepstakes title, and we knew we were going to be in a battle with Flathead for second place.”
The two-day tournament featured all 16 Class AA high schools, four Class A, B and C schools, in addition to nine junior varsity squads, “making it one of the largest and most competitive meets of the season,” Adkins said.
Glacier secured its place in the top three with individual champions, including Anya Denmark in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Joshua Lee in Memorized Public Address and Autumn Bashara in Impromptu Speaking.
“Our balance across the events once again kept us ahead of Flathead, and picking up wins in the final three events to finish was pretty exciting. Bozeman is the team to beat, that’s for sure. We have our work to do to catch them,” Adkins said.
Flathead had four individual champions, B. Poitra in Legislative Debate, Bronson Willcut in Program Oral Interpretation, Lincoln McElwain in Dramatic Interpretation, Adie Fedor in Informative Speaking.
