PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Tomco leads Sandpoint girls over Twin Falls for TitleOne Classic consolation championship
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 16 hours, 2 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 16, 2025 1:00 AM
GIRLS
Sandpoint 43, Twin Falls 34
IDAHO FALLS — Junior Jordyn Tomco tallied a game-high 16 points, including four three-pointers, and chipped in five rebounds and four steals as the Lady Bulldogs used a 21-2 run between the first and second quarters to take down the Lady Bruins in the TitleOne Tip-Off Classic Consolation Championship game held Saturday morning at the Mountain America Center.
Junior Brecken Mire recorded eight points, a team-high three assists, five rebounds and four steals while junior Jaylah Butler contributed four points and three steals for Sandpoint, which led 23-10 at intermission.
In the third, Tomco hit a pump-fake triple to make it a 32-17 game and junior Sienna Todd-Murray, who scored her first three career varsity points in a game against University High earlier this season, drained a three-pointer of her own as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Bulldogs a 37-19 lead heading into the final quarter of action.
"We're getting better and better in our press and our rotations, and knowing what coaches are asking for at different positions on the floor," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said of her team's defense, which held Twin Falls scoreless for nearly 11 minutes at one point. "Jordyn (Tomco) was our jump start after our offensive droughts — for her to be able to come down and hit those three's was huge for us."
Sophomore Willow Betz recorded four points and three steals while junior Livia Driggs pulled down a team-high six rebounds and had three steals for Sandpoint (7-1), which got a scoring contribution from every player who suited up in the victory and will host undefeated West Valley (4-0) of Spokane on Tuesday for a non-league game.
"The tournament was really well ran and the competition was really good," coach Schoening noted of the inaugural TitleOne Tip-Off Classic, which hosted Lacie and Lexie Hull as keynote speakers, both former Stanford University standouts — the latter of which now plays for the Indiana Fever alongside Caitlin Clark. "We learned a lot and also had a lot of fun along the way."

Bulldogs settle for fourth after comeback falls short
Vallivue 59, Sandpoint 54
IDAHO FALLS — Junior Brock Yarbrough and senior Logan Roos both finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals as the Bulldogs overcame three quarters of shooting woes to give the Falcons a run for their money, but the hosts held on for a five-point win in the TitleOne Tip-Off Classic third-place game held Saturday afternoon at the Mountain American Center.
Yarbrough, who netted a triple from way downtown and fought through contact to convert a layup late in the fourth quarter to keep Sandpoint in the game, also had a team-high four assists. Senior Tyler Weisz had six points, all from beyond the arc, and junior Logan Iverson also tallied six points and grabbed three steals for the Bulldogs, which outscored Vallivue 26-18 in the final frame after trailing 41-28 at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore Victor Gutierrez had a game-high 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Vallivue, which improved to 3-3 on the year.
"We put ourselves down and had to go out there and try to scratch our way back," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "A lot of props to Vallivue; they did a really good job of coming out and being aggressive, especially on the ball."
Roos added three blocks to his totals while senior Dallen Williams netted his first career varsity three-pointer in the second half. Junior Knox Williams recorded a three-pointer of his own, five rebounds and two assists, senior Caiden Gion four points, three rebounds and three assists for Sandpoint (3-3), which will return home on Tuesday night for a non-league matchup against unbeaten West Valley (4-0) of Spokane.
"We learned some things, especially on how to carry over momentum from game-to-game," coach Love noted of the three games in three days tournament format, similar to what the state championship playoffs would look like. "We have to be prepared to step on the court against everybody and anybody, both physically and mentally."
Coach Love, like coach Schoening, agreed that the tournament was well run, and that the facilities were beautiful.
"A great opportunity for our kids to get three games in an arena situation," coach Love said of the tournament and the Mountain America Center, home to the Idaho Falls Spud Kings minor league hockey team and various other events. "Our ultimate goal is to win our district, regional title and compete for a state title down in Boise. One of the things you have to do is win an arena, so this was a great experience."

Hatten's career night fuels Spartans to victory
Priest River 65, Grangeville 60
PRIEST RIVER — Senior Brady Hatten went to work down low, producing a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and the Spartans fended off the Bulldogs for a 3A Central Idaho League win on Saturday afternoon at Priest River High.
Hatten, who scored 10 points in each half, also had three blocks while senior Ian Lamanna recorded 18 points, including a three-pointer, and hauled in seven rebounds for Priest River, which led 34-26 at intermission.
With the score at 63-60, Grangeville, led by sophomore Bear Wilcoxon's 16 points, had a last-second three-point attempt fall shy as they fell to 0-5 on the season.
"Shoutout to the boys for coming together in transition and stepping up — I told them we needed 60-plus points to win the ball game and they got it done," Priest River High head coach Brian Hall, who took over the job for Kevin Wylie last week, said. "A real good effort overall... when you have three guys in double-figures you're going to win games. I was really happy with their efforts tonight; it feels good to start 1-0 in the league."
Hall, most recently the Post Falls High girls basketball coach, has coached football or basketball in five of Idaho's six districts over the last 25 years. The veteran, who took a two-year hiatus from coaching and is a 1989 graduate of Hansen High, has coached at schools such as Lakeside, Meridian, Aberdeen, Twin Falls, Vallivue and Jerome.
Senior Lucas Mathews tallied 10 points, including a three-pointer, sophomore Madden Redinger had nine points and the duo both came away with two steals apiece for Priest River (2-2), which bounced back after falling to Riverside High by a score of 62-35 on Friday in a non-league matchup on the road. The Spartans will face the Rams again at home on Tuesday night.
