YUMA, Ariz. — Karsyn Freeman, a freshman guard from Adna, Wash., scored a game-high 23 points for North Idaho College in a 64-49 win over Dawson Community College of Glendive, Mont., in the opening game of the Chapman Automotive Winter Classic at Arizona Western College on Tuesday.

“She’s got the ability to score and she’s the benefactor of that in some of the stuff that we do,” NIC coach Nathan Covill said. “It’s nice to have someone with a scoring mindset.”

Chloe Collin, a sophomore from Brampton, Alberta, had 11 points and six rebounds for NIC, which outscored Dawson 31-16 in the second half to pull away.

“We played a lot better in the second half,” Covill said. “It was kind of an ugly first half, but we were able to get some stops and do some things offensively. I don’t think anyone was happy with how we played, but we’ll take it.”

NIC (5-6) faces 21st-ranked Casper (Wyo.) College today at noon.

Hannah McDonald scored 21 points for Dawson (2-13).
