Polson and Ronan wrestling teams tested themselves against some of the state’s deepest competition last weekend at the Jim Street Mining City Duals at the Butte Civic Center.
Polson
Polson delivered an impressive showing across multiple pools, highlighted by a dramatic victory over Glacier and a dominant shutout win over Missoula Hellgate.
In the championship match, Polson edged Glacier (Kalispell) 41–39 in a back-and-forth dual that came down to bonus points and key pins. Shawn Stump delivered a crucial pin at 190 pounds, while Wyatt Boogerd (144), Sheamis Cobb (150) and Jaidon Mahkuk (157) all secured bonus-point wins. Cobb added a technical fall, and Mahkuk recorded a lightning-fast pin to help swing the dual in Polson’s favor.
Polson also notched a commanding 78–0 victory over Missoula Hellgate, winning every contested match and collecting a string of first-period pins. Stump, David Pierre, Christopher Sorrell, Dawson Nash, Gerardo Alverez, Corben Carlson and Ryatt Maley all won by fall as the Pirates overwhelmed Hellgate from the opening whistle.
Earlier in pool action, Polson defeated Havre 50–27 behind pins from Boogerd, Carlson, Mahkuk, Stump and Sorrell. Koal Wardall and Ryatt Maley added wins, helping Polson advance despite tough losses later to Missoula Sentinel and Great Falls/MSDB.
Against Sentinel, Polson dropped a 48–36 decision in a dual filled with rapid-fire pins on both sides, while Great Falls/MSDB handed Polson a 58–17 setback. Even in the losses, Stump continued his strong weekend with another pin at 190, and Maley picked up a narrow decision at 175.
Ronan
Ronan faced a challenging slate of opponents throughout the weekend, squaring off with several Class AA and out-of-state-caliber programs while earning key individual wins.
In a tightly contested dual, Ronan fell to Helena 42–36. Haysen Hakes set the tone early with a pin at heavyweight, and Skylar Sias, Isaiah Smith and Cooper Wayman also recorded falls to keep the Chiefs within striking distance. The dual remained close until the final bouts, where Helena capitalized on bonus points to pull away.
Ronan also faced Helena Capital in another placement match, falling 54–18. Wayman earned a pin at 215 pounds, and Josiah Houle and Caiden Pierre added wins as the Chiefs battled through a physically demanding dual.
Pool action proved especially challenging, with Ronan facing South Fremont, Billings West and Columbia Falls. South Fremont defeated Ronan 54–18, though Wayman and Sias each recorded pins, and Beau Lytle earned a forfeit win.
Billings West handed Ronan an 80–0 loss, showcasing the depth of one of the state’s premier programs. The Chiefs battled hard against Columbia Falls but came up short in a 47–36 loss. Ronan picked up key pins from Tobias Cantlon, Fred Webster, Wayman, Justus Orman-Bergman, Brander McCollum and Sias, keeping the dual competitive deep into the lineup.
