PREP BASKETBALL: Lakeland presses past Post Falls girls

RATHDRUM — After a slow start, a strong second quarter was just what the 5A Lakeland Hawks needed on Tuesday night. 

Lakeland outscored the 6A Post Falls Trojans 23-9 in the second quarter of a 53-44 win at Hawk Court, snapping the Trojans' three-game winning streak. 

“We didn’t start the game the way we wanted in the first quarter,” Lakeland coach Caelyn Caufield said. “But the response from our girls was exactly what we challenged them to do.” 

“We set them up for some transition baskets and it felt like we got a little loose with the basketball,” first-year Post Falls coach Brian Carlson said. “And I’ve got to do a better job of not making it happen. I need to do a better job of having us ready for that.” 

Senior Karstyn Kiefer scored a team-high 14 points and junior Macy Bretveld added 10 points for Lakeland (6-1), which hosts Shadle Park on Thursday. 

“Karstyn stepped up and did a great job controlling the tempo,” Caufield said. “Anabel (Bowie) gave us a huge lift with her help defense and relentless effort on the boards. We still have areas to grow, but I’m proud of the progress this team continues to make.” 

Post Falls outscored Lakeland 16-6 in the fourth quarter. 

“I was really proud of our girls for fighting back,” Carlson said. “Lakeland is a big, physical, well-coached team.” 

Post Falls (3-9) hosts Mt. Spokane on Friday.

PLUMMER — Senior Kyleigh Wolfe scored 23 points and sophomore Laila SiJohn added 21 as the host Knights broke it open in the third quarter en route to the Scenic Idaho Conference victory over the Miners at Ron Miller Court. 

Lakeside (5-2, 2-0 SIC) outscored Wallace (4-3, 1-1) 19-3 in the third quarter to expand its lead to 31 points.  

Senior Kylee Phillips scored 10 points for Wallace, which plays host to St. Maries on Thursday. 

Lakeland plays host to Tekoa-Rosalia (Wash.) tonight at 7 for senior night.

WALLACE — Junior Wade Van Gundy scored 16 points to lead the Tigers past the Miners in a nonleague game at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Senior Brant Rush added 15 points for Timberlake (3-2), which travels to Lakeside on Thursday. 

"The boys really stepped up on defense, led by Lake Hiaasen and Brendan Martin," Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. "They put pressure on the ball all game and really made it hard for their shooters to get good looks. Wade and Brant Rush carried us on offense. They made some great decisions with the ball and hit their shots. Max Simpson was strong on the glass — really stopped the offensive boards that hurt us last time we played them."

Sophomores Cooper Miller scored 19 points, sophomore Lennox Radford 16 points for Wallace (2-4), which travels to Kellogg on Thursday.
