PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Sandpoint sweeps George Wild team titles behind four champions

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 17, 2025 1:00 AM

KELLOGG — Sophomores Ty (106) and Zak Wood (126) took home individual titles for the boys, sophomore Avery Inge (125) and junior Teagan Newsom (145) captured their weight classes for the girls, and the Bulldogs wrestled their way to a pair of team titles at the George Wild Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Kellogg High's Andrews Gymnasium.

On the boys side, Ty Wood, after a first-round pin in his quarterfinals match and a second-round pin in the semifinals — neither of which he was scored on — defeated his opponent from Timberlake by a 6-0 decision to claim gold and wrap up a flawless two days of action. Zak Wood, who was also not scored on on his way to the championship match, picked up two victories by pin and then a victory via an 18-0 technical fall in the semifinals. In the first-place bout, trailing 5-2 in the third round, he was able to pin in his opponent from Eureka, Mont. in 5 minutes, 8 seconds to bring home gold.

Eli Taylor (150), Jeremiah Palmer (190), and William Bomba (285) all came away with second-place finishes for the Bulldogs, which scored 202.5 points, 27.5 more than runner-up St. Maries. Taylor and Bomba won three matches on the day, two by pin, while Palmer won three matches by pin before falling in the championship bout. John Holman (165) grabbed a third-place finish, Caiden Addington (165) and Dominic Ratigan (175) fourth-place finishes to round out Sandpoint's top scorers.

Justin Hopkins had two wins by pin and finished second as did Darien Ratzlaff, who had three victories via pin for Priest River, which finished ninth out of 22 scoring teams with 81 points. Taylor Dodd (285) won four consecutive matches by pin to claim an individual title for Bonners Ferry, which tied for 10th with 80 points.

For the girls, Inge won her first two matches by first-round pin, and in the championship match, overcame a 20-12 deficit and pinned her opponent from Bonners Ferry in the second round to clinch a gold. Newsom, in her two matches, claimed wins by first-round pin and was not scored on on her way to an individual championship.

In bracket action, Summer Birch (120), Izzy Stark (130), Vanessa Hood (140) and Ariana Turnbull (190) all grappled to silver medals for Sandpoint, which scored 142 points, 61.5 more than runner-up Coeur d'Alene. Birch and Hood both scored two wins by pin while Stark and Turnbull had one pin each across the two-day event. Mackenzee Donenfeld (100), Violet Henney (105) and Daphne Krenelka (125) collected third-place finishes, Shayne Pirlot (145) a fourth-place finish to help boost the Lady Bulldogs to the team win.

Zoey Fouts (100) and Naia Lamb (120) finished fourth for Priest River, which finished 12th out of 16 scoring teams with 17.5 points. Bonners Ferry placed 10th with 22 points behind a second-place finish from Aubree Graves (125).

Sandpoint and Priest River will take to the mats again this Friday and Saturday for the 54th annual Tri-State Tournament, set to be held at North Idaho College's Christianson Gymnasium.
