Incumbents all return to Council

PABLO – The final tally of votes for Tribal Council members and three resolutions, canvassed on Tuesday, showed tribal members to be evidently happy with the existing leadership.

None of the 31 challengers to incumbents in four of the districts was successful.

The only new face on the Council will be John McClure, running in the Arlee District, where Councilman Fred Whitworth was not seeking re-election. McClure took the contest by 36 votes, garnering 237 to runner-up Kevin Howlett’s 201.

But the closest contest was the St. Ignatius District, where incumbent Noel Pichette passed challenger Joe Felsman by nine votes, 139 to 130.

In Pablo Vic Stinger earned another term over the next closest runner, Thurman Trosper, by totals of 333 to 255 …

Ronan angry over plan to redistrict ‘A’ schools

RONAN – The Montana High School Association (MHSA) made something less than a hit with the Ronan School Board when earlier this month the Association proposed redistricting the various high schools in the state.

The proposal for Western A would remove Columbia Falls (which goes to AA) and Eureka (putting it in B). Added would be Dillon, Deer Lodge and Butte Central.

“In the strongest fashion possible the Board wishes to express its dissatisfaction with the plan,” wrote Ronan Superintendent of Schools K. William Harvey in a reply to the MHSA last week.

In addition to being happy with the conference as it stands, the School Board took exception to the proposal on mileage grounds. The yearly five sports trips to the three newcomers would take Ronan players and their buses an additional 3,220 miles, 28 percent higher than now traveled.

Dillon, the farthest from Ronan would have one-way mileage of 225, for a yearly total of 2250 miles …

Charlo girl chosen for concert tour

CHARLO – Connie Fryberger, a Junior at Charlo High School, had been notified that she was chosen to sing in the 1980 Montana Youth Choir European Concert Tour.

Each year high school students are picked for the tour from those who participated in all-state auditions for the music director at Great Falls High School.

Forty students from the state are chosen for the European tour. The choir will sing in many places such as at the top of a ski resort in Switzerland and at the place where the wedding scene for The Sound of Music was shot.

Connie will go to Great Falls in early June for 10 days, then they will be off to Europe. They will return in mid-July.
