NIC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals fight, but fall to No. 21 Casper
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 6 hours, 33 minutes AGO
YUMA, Ariz. — North Idaho College women’s basketball coach Nathan Covill liked everything about the Cardinals matchup with 21st ranked Casper College in the Chapman Automotive Winter Classic on Wednesday at Arizona Western College.
Well, almost everything.
Casper (15-2) outscored NIC (5-7) 19-12 in the second quarter of a 58-53 win, moving the Cardinals to 1-1 in the tournament.
“We decided to go to a zone and they got three 3’s on us,” Covill said. “I’ve got no problems with our effort and we kept our turnovers down. We had a lot of positives and if we can play that hard with that kind of togetherness in conference, we’re going to give ourselves a chance to win some games.”
Freshman Karsyn Freeman scored 18 points, sophomore Chloe Collin and Summer Faleafa added 10 points each for NIC. Diana Nelson, a freshman from Timberlake High, had seven points and 12 rebounds for the Cardinals.
“We had a lot of kids step up and make some big plays,” Covill said. “We just didn’t finish, and I’ll take the blame for that.”
NIC concludes the tournament against Northwest College of Powell, Wyo., today at 12:30 p.m. PST.
