The Troy Trojans basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after beating its county neighbor Libby, 51-34, Tuesday afternoon at Ralph Tate Gymnasium in Libby.
The Trojans last beat the Loggers on Jan. 30, 2015, 50-45. Troy was led by Sean Opland’s 18 points while Libby got 20 from Jonny Cielak.
Three Troy players helped end the 10-year gap between wins over Libby. Thomas Guinard had a big game with 16 points for the Trojans. Carson Orr and Nolan Morris each scored 11 points. Mason Crowe scored nine and Dmitrii Walenter scored four.
Kale Hall and Tristan Andersen each had 10 points for Libby. The Loggers are off to an 0-4 start and have lost each game by double digits.
Troy jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Guinard scored the first six points and Mason Crowe, who scored nine, scored.
But the Loggers fought back and took an 11-10 lead to the second quarter. Blaise Erickson’s 3-pointer started an 11-2 run and James Woody’s basket ended it.
The Loggers built their lead to six points, 16-10, but the Trojans used a 12-0 run to end the first half with a 22-16 lead. Morris hit a jumper and Guinard followed with a 3-pointer. Walenter’s putback gave Troy a 17-16 lead with 3:28 left, one it held for the rest of the game.
The Trojans added to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring Libby 15-10. Orr had five points and Morris scored three.
Libby hung around in the fourth and trailed by eight, 38-30, after a basket by Andersen.
But near the midway point of the quarter, Troy took control and outscored Libby 13-4 the rest of the way.
Walenter was fouled and hit both free throws while Orr’s traditional 3-point play made it 43-30 on the way to a 17-point win.
Troy, 2-0, also won last weekend, topping Alberton, 64-30, Saturday. The Trojans are scheduled to play Saturday at Noxon.
Libby was scheduled to play at Stevensville Friday, but in the wake of the massive power outages in the area, school was cancelled for the remainder of the week and next week is the holiday break.
Libby will return to action Jan. 8 at Whitefish.
