SANDPOINT — Two Sandpoint Police Department officers took the next step toward certification by graduating from the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training division.
Officers Heidi Barmore and Ben Wilkowski completed the Meridian-based 14-week academy Dec. 12. Police Chief Corey Coon said the two will return to Sandpoint for their next step toward certification by completing the 16-week training program with the department.
“Their dedication and hard work throughout the training not only reflect their commitment to law enforcement but also showcase the values of the city of Sandpoint and our police department,” Coon said of Barmore and Wilkowski. “We eagerly anticipate their return to our community and look forward to their completion of the field training program.”
Wilkowski earned the academy’s Top Student Award, which is given to the officer who scores the highest on the tests and evaluations in the program. Coon said the honor is representative of Wilkowski's excellence in training.
Operated by the Idaho State Police and POST council, Coon said the comprehensive program is meant to educate incoming officers with the knowledge they need to serve. In addition to completing field training with SPD, the officers will also have to complete a six-month probation period to be eligible for basic certification.
“This next phase of their training will further prepare them to serve and protect the citizens of Sandpoint, ensuring that they continue to uphold the high standards of our police department,” Coon said. “Thank you to our community for their continued support of our officers and the valuable work they do for our city.”
