Lake City product Mitchell leads Vandals past Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Kolton Mitchell, a redshirt sophomore from Lake City High, scored a season-high 31 points, including a go-ahead four-point play with 7.5 seconds left in overtime, and Idaho survived a shaky end of regulation to beat Cal Poly 83-80 on Sunday before 2,157 at the Mott Athletics Center. 

With Idaho down by one inside of 10 seconds, Mitchell hit a step-back 3, was fouled and sank the free throw to put Idaho (8-4) up 81-78. 

Cayden Ward made two free throws for Cal Poly (5-9) with 5 seconds left, then Mitchell sank two with 3 ticks left.  

Idaho tried to foul at midcourt, but it wasn’t called, and Cal Poly missed a heave from just inside the halfcourt line at the buzzer. 

Biko Johnson added 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Vandals, who played most of the game without Jack Layne, who was injured four minutes in. Trevon Blassingame had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Mitchell’s 31 points were one off his career high of 32 against Pacific last season. He was 6 of 12 from 3-point range Sunday, and grabbed a career-high six rebounds.

Hamad Mousa led the Mustangs (5-9) with 33 points and 10 rebounds. Ward finished with 22 points and six rebounds. 

Mousa was fouled on a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation and made all three free throws to send the game to overtime. 

Idaho plays at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday.
