Park Ranger Robert Sellers survived a plunge into the North Fork of the Flathead River after his truck went off the icy road near Canyon Creek culvert and plunged more than 100 feet into the water. Sellers credited his seatbelt for saving his life. At first the truck was upside down but it righted itself and Sellers got out in about 4 feet of water.

Biologist Bob Riggs was counting bighorn sheep in the Many Glacier Valley of Glacier National Park. His high count came in June, when he counted 92 individuals including seven lambs. He was also studying sheep behavior.

A study was looking at the potential impacts of the Cabin Creek Coal mine in Canada. The mine would have been just eight miles from Glacier National Park and would have polluted the North Fork of the Flathead River.

The county informed the school district it would stop plowing the road in front of Canyon Elementary School because it wasn’t a county road. The school district was taken aback, noting the county had been plowing it for the past 29 years.

Daniel Smiley, who was 25 at the time, ran down Nucleus Avenue naked on a dare. Unfortunately for him, a Columbia Falls Police officer saw him and arrested him as Smiley was trying to get dressed in a restaurant bathroom he ran back into on a chilly December night.

The area’s small schools at Deer Park and West Glacier were growing. Both schools saw significant rises in enrollments and continue to be attractive choices to parents today.
