LAS VEGAS — Juniors Tannar Stern and Davis Whittaker stepped up in the scoring column, and the Coeur d’Alene Vikings won their final game at the Tarkanian Classic on Tuesday, beating the James Madison Trojans of Dallas, Texas, 75-73 at Coronado High.

Stern scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half, Whittaker nine of his 15 in the second for Coeur d’Alene (3-5), which finished 1-3 in the Spalding Bracket.

Coeur d’Alene senior Caden Symons, who went off for 53 points on Saturday, picked up two fouls in the first 30 seconds Tuesday, and sat for some 8 minutes.

He finished with 24 points in the game, played in two 16-minute halves.

“His teammates rose to the occasion,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said. “Stern and Whittaker were outstanding.”

Sophomore Sam Priebe hit two big 3-pointers in the second half for the Vikings in the midst of two different runs by Madison. With Coeur d’Alene up by one point, junior Rylan Braga drilled what Leiss called “the biggest shot of the game” with 35 seconds left, a 3-pointer after the Vikings broke the Trojans’ press.

Josiah Cobb, a 6-1 junior guard, scored 23 points, and Jamirion Rice, a 6-4 senior forward, added 20 points for Madison (5-10).

“We faced a full-court run-and-jump press for the last 24 minutes,” Leiss said. “Our team got better every game in this tournament.”

Coeur d’Alene returns to action Jan. 3 at Ferris of Spokane.
