PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Holman overcomes adversity to take second at Tri-State Invite
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 hours, 48 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 24, 2025 1:00 AM

COEUR d'ALENE — Sandpoint High senior Jackson Holman, wrestling at 215 pounds, won four of his five matches at Saturday's 54th annual Tri-State Invitational at North Idaho College to lead the Bulldogs to a 25th-place team finish out of 55 scoring teams.
Coming into the week, Holman wasn’t sure if he’d be healthy enough to compete after dealing with some back issues. Well, he was, and did maybe even better than he expected. After winning his opener by pin, his second-round matchup by a 24-6 technical fall, and his quarterfinals and semifinals bouts by pin, which included defeating an opponent he fell to last season, Holman finished runner-up to Mead High senior Logan Ullah, falling by a 20-5 major decision in the finals.
“He is having an incredible year so far and there is much more to come," Sandpoint High head coach Josh Ratigan said of the 2024 5A state runner-up. "Very proud of him. A true example of a teammate, captain and leader."
Ty Wood (106), Zak Wood (126), Conner Brown (132), Eli Taylor (150), Caiden Addington (157), John Holman (165) and Jeremiah Palmer (190) all qualified and competed for the Bulldogs.
Ty Wood rattled off three consolation round wins — one by major decision and two by decision — while brother Zak Wood won three bouts across the weekend — one apiece by pin, decision and major decision. Addington won a consolation match by pin and one by medical forfeit while Palmer won his opener by pin and a consolation bout by a 13-0 major decision to help Sandpoint to a total of 63.5 points, .5 ahead of 5A Inland Empire League rival Lewiston. With the Bulldogs' 25th-place finish this year, they'll be eligible to bring their full team next season.
For Priest River, Justin Hopkins (98), Tadhg McLaimtaig (113), Jack Zalewski (120), Liam Pettit (126), Bill Rapier (144) and Darien Ratzlaff (215) all qualified and competed. Ratzlaff won two matches by pin, Rapier one match by pin to lift the Spartans to a tie for 52nd place overall with 11 points.
Bonners Ferry's Taylor Dodd (285) placed fifth to lead the Badgers, which finished 45th with 22 points.
