MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLING: Sandpoint teams post top finishes at district championships

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 hours, 29 minutes AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 25, 2025 1:00 AM

GIRLS

PRIEST RIVER — Lexie Larson (80) won an individual championship and the Lady Bullpups picked up six second-place finishes on their way to a second-place team finish at the Jerry Lamb Memorial All-Girls District Championship held Dec. 4 at Priest River Jr./Sr. High.

Quinlan Bunge (80), Nina Tajan (86), Kylie Boecker (98), Delaney Montgomery (104), Elka Heuser (110) and Evie Hamilton (151) all grabbed silver medals while Annmarie Knobbs (110) and Addison Hyder (116) wrestled their way to bronze. Fiona Naples (104), Jordyn Plue (110), Allison Fruhwirth (130) and Evie Hamilton (151) were all fourth for Sandpoint, which scored 166 total points.

Kiera Blaine (98) was third for Priest River, which placed 12th amongst the 14-team field with 34 points.

147 girls competed at this year's championship, 47 more than last year. Moscow, which only had five girls compete last season, had 36 wrestlers and won the team title with 200 points in their first season as an official program.

"With Moscow's addition of girls wrestling, their success wasn’t an accident," Sandpoint head coach Valerie Johansen said. "It came from giving girls an intentional, well-planned, equitable space to compete. When the environment changed, the results followed. They didn’t just win matches; these girls became distinct champions in their very first season. They proved what we’ve been saying all along: when schools invest in girls, girls succeed. They follow the roadmap, and they find the finish line. We are very happy for Moscow and we hope that teams will continue to follow. As for Sandpoint, obviously, we want to be on the top of the podium. However, this was a younger team that worked very hard and I could not be more proud of them."
