Free classical music concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 18

The United States Air Force clarinet quartet will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center, 405 N. William St, Post Falls.
Performing musicians will be Master Sgt. Susan Govier, Master Sgt. Randolph Palada, Staff Sgt. Clarissa Osborn and Staff Sgt. Louis Kim.
Originally from Colorado, Govier graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in music performance and from Arizona State University in 2001 with a master’s degree in music performance. In the summer of 2001, she auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., where she served as clarinetist.
Throughout her four assignments, Govier’s responsibilities have included director of operations and first sergeant. She has also had the honor of performing for numerous U.S. presidents and dignitaries.
Palada is a 2010 graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance. In 2012, he received a master’s degree in music performance with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. Palada was principal clarinet of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, has held positions with both the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Discovery Chamber Ensemble, was a substitute musician with the San Antonio Symphony and performed in the Saar Wind Projekt ensemble in Saarbrucken, Germany.
Osborn is a 2013 graduate of the University of Oregon in Eugene where she earned a bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance. In 2015, she received a master’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Osborn held the position as principal clarinet of the Newport Symphony in Newport, Ore. from 2017-2019, served as clarinetist with the Hollywood Concert Orchestra on its 2017 tour of Japan and has subbed with symphonies such as the Eugene Symphony in Eugene and the Dearborn Symphony in Michigan.
Kim is a 2016 graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, San Francisco, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance. In 2018 he received a master’s degree from DePaul University, Chicago. His teachers include Luis Baez, Jeff Anderle, Julie DeRoche and Larry Combs. During his Air Force career, he has musically supported Brigadier Gen. Chuck Yeager’s memorial service, recorded a radio session with the Serbian Jazz Orchestra and has performed alongside with the Ukraine National Presidential Orchestra and the British Army Band Colchester in Kyiv.
The clarinet quartet belongs to the Air Force Band of the Golden West, stationed in the San Francisco Bay area at Travis Air Force Base. The only active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, the band comprises 60 talented and versatile Airman-musicians forming a concert band, jazz band, rock band and many classical chamber groups.
In addition to performing for civilian communities throughout the states of California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Nevada, the band supports 13 Air Force bases, eight Air Force Reserve Wings and six recruiting squadrons in over 250 annual performances for audiences totaling 7 million.
The Band of the Golden West has performed for gubernatorial inaugurations, with guest artists such as Marvin Stamm, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Hope and for the fans of San Francisco Giants, Sacramento Kings, and the San Francisco 49ers. In 2023, the band was honored to perform for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting hosted by President Joe Biden in San Francisco and attended by dozens of presidents and prime ministers from around the world.
More recent events include featured performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and the Tournament of Roses Parade.
