SAN DIEGO — After trying some new things to open the season, Lake City turned back the clock a little to get some momentum.

Junior Jordan Carlson had 16 points and eight rebounds, senior Paxton Winey added 14 for the Timberwolves, who beat the O’Dea Fighting Irish of Seattle 64-42 in a National Division game in the Torrey Pines Winter Classic at Torrey Pines High on Saturday.

It was a season-low for O’Dea (5-3).

“Defensively, it really starts with Jackson Bowman,” Lake City coach James Anderson said of the senior. “The guys we’ve asked him to guard this month have been crazy. Both him and Josh Watson really got us started on that end. To hold a team like O’Dea to 42, that’s incredible.”

Lake City led 30-17 at halftime. Watson, a senior, had six points, six rebounds and four steals for the Timberwolves.

“We started the season trying to do some things differently on defense,” Anderson said. “We found that we wanted to go back to what we did last year, and we’ve been guarding the ball outstanding, and our rotations have been incredible. We didn’t really know our identity yet this season, but I think we found it.”

Lake City (7-4), 1-1 at the tourney, faces Winward of Los Angeles on Monday at 11:40 a.m.
