IDAHO FALLS — Win or lose on Monday, the Post Falls Trojans were going to advance to today’s semifinals of the East Idaho Shootout.

That’s because the Trojans’ opponent, Madison of Rexburg, could only play one game in the tourney because of limits on the number of games a team can play during the regular season.

Still ...

“We wanted to make sure we earned it,” Post Falls coach Jayson UIrich said of his team’s berth in the semis.

Senior Jaxon Lysne’s driving layup with 20 seconds left gave Post Falls the lead, and the Trojans snuffed out Madison’s attempt to tie at the end for a 52-50 victory at Thunder Ridge High.

“They are not a 2-7 team; they’re good,” Ulrich said of Madison, last year’s state 6A consolation champions. “It was physical, and our kids answered everything. They could have caved and they didn’t.”

Connor Carver had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Post Falls (6-3), which will play host Thunder Ridge (7-1) in the semis today at 5 p.m. PST. Lysne added 13 points, Cashton Bodman 12.

“Cashton had two big blocks in key situations,” Ulrich said. “Connor was consistent. And Jaxon was an absolute stud tonight.”

Junior guard Rhett Hammond scored 19 points for Madison, but with Lysne defending him, none came in the fourth quarter. And Lysne had seven of his points in the final quarter.

After Lysne’s go-ahead hoop, Post Falls had fouls to give, and made the Bobcats burn off 17 seconds as the Trojans kept fouling. Finally, Madison missed a 12-foot fadeaway at the buzzer.

“They played really well and shot the ball better than we’d seen on film,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “They had several different players making shots and we got a little spread out. They just proved to be a tough matchup for us today.”

Senior Josh Watson scored 19 points for Lake City (7-5), which concludes the tournament today against Francis Parker of San Diego today at 12:10 p.m.

“We’re down here to learn and get better,” Anderson said. “We caught some tough breaks, but we fought and had a chance to get within five points in the fourth quarter. I’m proud of the kids for fighting and doing what they could.”

LEWISTON — Junior Draeden Taylor scored 12 points for the 3A Wildcats in a loss to the 5A Bengals in the opening round of the Avista Winter Classic at Lewis-Clark State College.

"We competed in the first quarter tonight but got dominated on the glass and behind the arc," Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. "We gave too many extra possessions and clean looks from 3 for a team that shoots it as well as Lewiston does. They scored on 10 of their 13 second quarter possessions and our lack of urgency during that stretch blew the game wide open."

Kellogg (2-4) faces Pendleton, Ore., in a consolation game today.

Blaze Hepburn scored 21 points for Lewiston (5-2), which faces Ellensburg (Wash.) today in a semifinal game.
