Sidelines: The calm after is the calm before the storm

It is the calm after the storm; it is the calm before the storm.
As always this time of year, the holidays have interrupted the prep sports seasons, giving all those involved, including players, coaches, fans and other interested observers a little time to reflect on what was and what could still be in their chosen sports.
As the year 2025 graduates into history and 2026 is born into existence, the coming months promise to provide definition to both years, the one just passed and the one that is rapidly approaching, almost here.
It’s been an interesting ride for this grizzled, old sports writer so far, these past few months since I have returned to the business, but I feel like I’m finally starting to get my game back.
SPEAKING OF getting games back, as a devout Montana fan, it would sure be nice to get both of the Bobcats’ football wins over the Griz this season back.
If Montana had won that first game in Missoula several weeks ago, and they very nearly did, chances are the second one, which Montana State won last week in Bozeman in the FCS playoff semifinals, would have also been played in Missoula, which would have greatly increased the chance of a Grizzly win in the rematch.
Alas, now we must watch the rival Bobcats as they play Illinois State for the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision for those of you who were wondering) national championship Jan. 5 in Nashville. I am trying to put on my best Montana-first face and make a show of rooting for the Bobcats, but am unsure if I can actually do it or not.
Poooor Bobcats… Whoops, my sincere apologies, I mean Gooooo Bobcats! For one day at least.
