Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Brett Nelson said Monday that law enforcement officials don't know what motivated the suspect in the Wallace shooting Friday. 

“Unfortunately, just like the Canfield incident, we may never know of the specifics, just because we’re not in the minds of individuals who carry out acts such as this,” Nelson said. 

Shots were fired just after 2:30 p.m. Friday, striking the Ace Hardware building on Bank Street in Wallace. A standoff ensued with law enforcement after the suspect fled into the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office.    

Suspect John Drake, 77, from Mullan, was pronounced dead by 4:15 p.m.  

Two civilian women sitting in a pickup truck outside the sheriff’s office received bullet wounds in the legs, according to the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office.  

Kellogg Police Department Officer Dameon Groves was reported to have been struck in the ear but was still able to finish his shift after receiving treatment, Kellogg Police Chief Paul Twidt said. All three shooting victims are recovering well.   

“We're just tying up the loose ends of the investigation,” Nelson said. “There may be precursors or identifying factors that may lead us in a direction, but there’s been nothing at this time to release.”  

He declined to say what type of weapon Drake used or how many shots he fired.

Nelson said that Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy is handling future inquiries. Idaho State Police is handling the officer-involved shooting. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office are handling the criminal aspect of the incident. 

Responding agencies included Idaho State Police, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, the Spokane Sheriff’s Office, Pinehurst Police, Kellogg Police, Osburn Police, Mineral County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, U.S. Marshals and Silver Valley Fire Rescue.
