Bonners Ferry boys basketball recorded their first winning streak of the season, improving to 4-3 after a 69-51 victory over Lake Roosevelt during the first day of a two-day tournament in Reardan, Washington on Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Junior Ty Schrock, junior Peyton Hinthorn, senior Sulay Abubakari, junior Jameson Cartwright-Kissee and senior Micah Thomson started for the Badgers.
It was an even start for both teams, with Bonners Ferry taking a one-point lead after eight minutes. The second quarter was less of a contest, with the lead up to ten points for Bonners Ferry.
Midway through the third quarter, the score was 46-37 in favor of the Badgers, with the game still in the balance. By the end of the third quarter, the Badgers had gone on a 12-0 run, the score was 58-37 and the lead was near insurmountable. Despite a 14-11 advantage for the Raiders in the fourth quarter, the game ended with a Bonners Ferry victory.
Head coach Greg Kissee spoke about the team before their win and how playing in close games has helped them.
“I think the kids are just starting to play well together and we're getting a better rotation down,” Kissee said. “Getting the experience of a close game, knowing who we're trying to get the ball to and how to handle that situation, that's big for us.”
He shared his favorite moment of the season so far.
“That was a big win for us in Moscow,” Kissee said. “We were down with two or three minutes to go. It was nice to see the kids come back. This group has a lot of heart and it's nice to see them kind of come together as a team and keep their heads up and play hard.”
Kissee highlighted several other players making an impact this season.
“Everybody knows Peyton Hinthorn and Sulay Abubakari, but we're actually having other kids step up,” Kissee said. “Ty Schrock's played good for me. I think Jameson Cartwright-Kissee was five for six from the three point line against Lewiston and his man in the second half didn't score one point. Conrad Hiatt is playing really good for me off the bench. Certain kids are starting to kind of step into these roles and step up.”
