PREP BASKETBALL: Priest River boys sweep season series with Grangeville
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 hours, 42 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 1, 2025 7:25 PM
BOYS BASKETBALL

PRIEST RIVER — Senior Sawyer Staudt tied a game-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and the host Spartans started and closed strong in a 3A Central Idaho League win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
While Staudt was a threat from deep, senior Nate Stifel, who had 13 points and six rebounds, and senior Carter Cook, who had 11 points and nine rebounds, controlled the paint for Priest River, which led 32-22 at halftime.
"One thing I've said throughout the year is that we've been having trouble starting games, putting ourselves behind and playing without a lead," Priest River High head coach Kevin Wylie said. "We wanted to push the tempo and have been working on a lot of transition offense... I thought we did a good job tonight of executing that, which created some easy looks early on and helped us get into our press and force some turnovers."
Senior Palmer Coleman capped off the Spartans' all-around game, recording eight points and a game-high five assists and six steals.
Sophomore Gage Smith had 14 points for Grangeville.
Priest River (12-3, 5-1) was originally scheduled to play Clark Fork on Tuesday — they'll be sending their junior varsity team there instead. The Spartans will return to action Wednesday when they host the 4A top-ranked Badgers of Bonners Ferry.
