PREP WRESTLING: Post Falls wins 12th Rumble title in 15 years
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 hours, 23 minutes AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — If you need a good refresher of just how tough wrestling in North Idaho can be, take the 165-pound final at the North Idaho Rumble for example.
Coeur d’Alene’s Brock Armstrong locked up with Damion Hamilton of Post Falls.
It was a battle that kept going.
And going.
And going.
And going.
Armstrong eventually notched a 3-2 win over Hamilton in the fourth overtime for the Vikings.
“They’re going to see each other Wednesday (at Post Falls) and again in districts,” Post Falls coach Jeremy Zender said. “And that’s going to be the norm in all their matches. They’re going to be tight and any one of them can come out with a win on that night.”
“It was just a great match by two great wrestlers,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Those guys can both beat each other, it’s that close.”
Post Falls won its 12th North Idaho Rumble in the 15 years of the event, finishing with 349.5 points.
“I don’t know what it is, but we’ve always performed really well here,” Zender said. “I don’t know if it’s because we’re peaking at the right time, being at home in our own beds, but it really helps.”
Coeur d’Alene finished second with 258 points.
“We wrestled well, but are still making some late match mistakes and falling into situations that we need to fix,” Moffat said. “Districts is going to be tough with only two automatic berths. There’s going to be some good wrestlers left at home.”
Lake City’s Sebastian Mosman (285) and Garrett Leonard (215) also won titles.
“Sebastian had a really great tournament and wasn’t tested in a bracket that had five Tri-State placers,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Garrett dislocated his kneecap 45 seconds into his match, and it looked bad, but he gutted it out. He’s just a tough kid and for him to gut it out, it was amazing.”
Other area boys champions were Tristan Mendenhall (98 pounds), Rider Seguine (138), Kyle Miller (157), Trey Smith (175), Seth Martin (190) of Post Falls, Timberlake's Wyatt Carey (106), Kellogg's Colton Storey (113), Lakeland's Carson Leonard (120) and Jaren Knopp (126), Priest River's Colm McLaimtaig (144)
Lake City’s Alexxis Johnson won at 120 pounds, beating Emma Garman of Sandpoint in the girls tournament.
“She’s just wrestling smart and being patient,” Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said. “She’s really putting everything together right now and I told her she’s on the right path. Emma’s a really good wrestler and this is going to help her going forward.”
Kahil Brown (132) of Post Falls and Brooklyn Anderson (165) of Coeur d'Alene won girls championships, along with Timberlake's Shelby Garten (132).
