Ronan wrestlers win Divisionals

The Ronan wrestling team won the MHSA A Western Divisional tournament in Browning over the weekend with two wrestlers winning divisional championships.

Ridge Cote won the 132-pound bracket, winning all of his matches by fall. He pinned Reece Peitzsch of Columbia Falls in just 33 seconds in the opening round and followed up with a 58-second pin over Ryder Rodriguez of Hamilton.

Cote continued his streak with a quick 1:03 pin over Darrin Denton of Libby/Troy in the semifinals. In the championship match, he defeated Logan Barnes of Beaverhead Co. with a fall at 3:59, earning the divisional title.

Koda King continued his dominant season by cruising to the divisional title in the 165-pound bracket. After a first-round bye, he pinned Landen Salios of Browning in 1:06 and Kade Bowles of Corvallis in just 57 seconds in the semifinals. In the championship match, King showcased his skill with a commanding 13-4 major decision over Blaise Cronk of Columbia Falls to take first place.

Heavyweight Jackson Davis had a stellar run to the finals and placed second, pinning Blaine Wallace of Corvallis in 1:13 and Cade Bullshoe of Browning in just 1:02. In the semifinals, he secured a pin over Sam Akey of Whitefish at 3:56. In the championship match, Davis battled against Holland Jantzen of Bigfork, ultimately falling at the 7:14 mark to take second place.

At 110 pounds, Brander McCollum had an impressive run to the finals. He started strong in the quarterfinals, securing a quick pin over Kelsen Brackett of Butte Central in just 1:14. He followed that up with a dominant major decision (13-3) over Lucas Hesse of Frenchtown in the semifinals.

In the championship match, McCollum faced undefeated Marquis Abad of Butte Central. Despite putting up a fight, McCollum was pinned at the 4:54 mark, earning a runner-up finish and valuable points for Ronan.

Justus Orman-Bergman had a solid tournament run at 118 pounds with a third-place finish, starting with a bye in the first round. He pinned Gerardo Alvarez of Polson in 3:29 in the quarterfinals but was stopped in the semis. Orman-Bergman bounced back with a decisive 9-0 major decision over Angel Lorenzana Enriquez of Columbia Falls in the consolation semis.

Daniel Sanchez battled his way to a seventh-place finish at 118 pounds. He started with a first-round pin over Achius Lee of Whitefish (1:17) but fell in the quarterfinals to Bridger Bache of Libby/Troy. Sanchez won his final match in dominant fashion, securing a 10-0 major decision over Noah Rust of Bigfork to take seventh.

Luc Cheff’s tournament performance earned him sixth place at 126 pounds. He received a first-round bye and then pinned Logan Clairmont of Polson in 1:19. Cheff continued his winning streak with a pin over Sean Davis of Corvallis in 1:41.

Unfortunately, his semifinal match against Pita Fish of Browning ended abruptly due to an injury default. Cheff was unable to continue in the tournament and finished in sixth place due to multiple injury defaults.

Skylar Sias had a strong showing at 138 pounds and placing fifth, notching a first-round pin over Ian Digiovanni of Hamilton in just 1:05. He lost a tough decision (17-10) in the quarterfinals but rebounded with two wins in the consolation bracket, including a pin over Sno Momberg of Browning and a 10-4 decision over Fisher Whitaker of Columbia Falls. Sias fell in the consolation semis but finished his tournament with a fifth-place victory by injury default over Nicholas Campbell of Libby/Troy.

At 157 pounds, Jairyn Krause placed fourth, securing a first-round pin over Bryan LaFex-Toavs of Columbia Falls and a tech fall victory over Emery Madplume of Browning. He fell in the semifinals to Tucker Crowe of Beaverhead Co. but bounced back with a 28-second pin over Landon Bryan of Stevensville/Victor. In the third-place match, Krause lost to Castin Borkholder of Corvallis by fall, taking fourth place.

Brady Hout and Dominque McKay battled through a tough 175-pound bracket, facing each other twice including in the 3rd-4th place match. Hout won their first meeting in the quarterfinals with a narrow 1-0 decision.

After a semifinal loss, Hout rebounded with a fall over Sergi Chinikaylo of Frenchtown and then secured a 7-0 decision over McKay in the third-place match. McKay’s path included wins over Damien Kato of Polson and Colton Snyder of Corvallis, finishing fourth.

At 190 pounds, Cooper Wayman put together a powerful tournament performance to place third, bouncing back from a quarterfinal loss to Ian Thom of Libby/Troy. He went on a pinning spree in the consolation bracket, defeating Jake Nyholm of Stevensville/Victor, Cayde Olsen of Corvallis, and Noah Guisinger of Hamilton. In the third-place match, Wayman avenged his earlier loss by defeating Thom with a commanding 10-2 major decision.

Isaac Rodriguez battled through the 215-pound bracket to place fifth, losing in the quarterfinals but fighting back to secure a fifth-place finish. He won his final match with a fall over Adam Lolli of Columbia Falls at the 4:49 mark.

 

Three Polson wrestlers place in top five

Polson wrestlers showed resilience and determination throughout the Western A Divisional Tournament in Browning over the weekend. Wyatt Moldenhaur, Gerardo Alverez  and Ryatt Maley secured top-five finishes as state looms in the near future.

At 103 pounds, Moldenhaur had an impressive tournament, finishing in fourth place and earning 17.5 team points. Moldenhaur started strong, winning his first-round match with a technical fall. He continued his momentum with a fall over Frenchtown’s Caleb Weldon (5:54) in the quarterfinals.

After getting defeated In the semifinals, Moldenhaur rebounded in the consolation semifinals with a quick fall over Browning’s Tayden Shooter (1:41), but fell in the third place match against Libby/Troy’s Levi Nick (4:43).

Alverez placed fifth at 118 pounds, scoring 13.0 team points. After receiving a bye in the first round, Alverez fell in the quarterfinals but he recovered in the consolation rounds, securing back-to-back falls against Whitefish’s Achius Lee (0:23) and Bigfork’s Noah Rust (0:38).

He lost in the consolation semifinals but closed out his tournament with a fall victory over Columbia Falls’ Angel Lorenzana Enriquez (2:00) in the fifth-place match.

At 132 pounds, Corben Carlson secured a seventh-place finish and scored 10.0 team points. He won his opening match in dominant fashion, earning a major decision (16-6) over Frenchtown’s Ryder Haskins.

After falling in the quarterfinals, Carlson rebounded in the consolation bracket with a fall over Hamilton’s Colt Yocom (2:35) but was eliminated from the top six after losing to Corvallis’ Shane Spencer (0:38). In the seventh place match, Carlson avenged his earlier loss to Ryder Haskins with a fall in 1:58.

At 150 pounds, Ryatt Maley finished in fifth place, earning 11.0 team points. After losing a tight 10-8 decision in the first round, Maley fought his way through the consolation bracket with a fall over O’Roake and a major decision (9-0) over Columbia Falls’ Rebel Crump.

He lost a rematch to Whitefish’s Carter Olson in the consolation semifinals (2-1) but secured fifth place with a hard-fought decision over Frenchtown’s David Brant (14-7).

Sheamis Cobb placed eighth at 157 pounds and scored two team points. After losing in the quarterfinals to Columbia Falls’ Dylan Delorme, Cobb won a close match against teammate Gabriel Houston (3-2) but was forced to forfeit his next two bouts due to injury.
