MOSES LAKE — The Joann Fabric and Crafts location in Moses Lake is one of 21 stores that will be closing as the company continues bankruptcy proceedings. Locations in East Wenatchee, Walla Walla and Clarkston also will be closing, along with one of two locations in Spokane and one location in Spokane Valley. 

Amanda Hayes, director for corporate communications and engagement, said the timing of the closures will depend on the bankruptcy proceedings. 

“If the court approves the motion in (Friday’s) hearing, sales will commence Saturday, Feb. 15, and could go on for several months,” she wrote in answer to an email from the Herald. 

The closures were announced in a bankruptcy filing Wednesday. The company proposes closing about 500 of its 850 locations nationwide, including most of the locations in Washington. Before the bankruptcy filing, Joann had 30 locations in Washington.  

“A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company determined which stores should remain operating as usual during this time,” said a statement released by Joann officials when the closures were announced. “Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for Joann.” 

The current round of closures also includes two locations in Idaho, two in Montana and 15 in Oregon.  

“This was a very difficult decision to make given the major impact we know it will have on our (employees) our customers and all of the communities we serve,” the statement said. 

Company officials filed for bankruptcy Jan. 15, following an earlier bankruptcy filing in April 2024.  

“The company is seeking court approval to commence a process for the sale of substantially all its assets,” according to a statement released Jan. 15. Company officials said in the press release they had an offer from Gordon Brothers, a Boston-based firm.  

“Gordon Brothers has indicated that it intends to pursue a liquidation of the company and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all locations,” the press release said. 

    Joann isn't the only area retailer to announce liquidations and closures recently. Big Lots, including its Moses Lake location, was one of the retail chains purchased by Gordon Brothers, which is as of Thursday the only company to make an offer for Joann Fabric and Crafts.
