Making a splash: Kraken Coral & Coffee puts twist on traditional coffee shop
HAILEY HILL | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month, 1 week AGO
POST FALLS — Clint Gateley has two passions: saltwater fish and coffee.
Recently, he took a chance and combined them to create a unique coffee shop experience.
“You keep hearing about these cat cafés. ... but you’ve never heard of a fish café,” Gateley said.
Kraken Coral & Coffee’s offerings go beyond traditional coffee shop fares; the dozens of colorful saltwater fish and corals in the shop’s tanks are available for purchase.
Aside from chain pet stores like PetCo, there are currently no other shops in the area that specialize in saltwater fish, Gateley said.
Gateley has over 30 years of experience working with saltwater fish — but the opportunity to build his hobby into something more came only about a year ago when he was approached by a friend about taking over a coral shop in Sandpoint.
“It was no question,” Gateley said. “I turned to my wife, and we said, ‘I guess we’re buying a coral store.”
However, Gateley and his wife, Lindsey, ultimately decided to bring the shop to Post Falls to avoid the commute.
Because of the absence of saltwater fish and coral specialty stores in the region, Gateley saw a need to create a community space for people to come together in a shared interest.
“Now that there’s nothing else in town, I thought, ‘We need some place for people to come to, to gather,’” Gateley said.
That’s where Gateley’s other passion, coffee, came into play.
“I’ve turned my hobbies into a passion, and a business,” Gateley said.
Kraken Coral & Coffee sources their beans from the same roasters as Super 1 Foods.
Right now, Gateley is working to find that perfect blend of espresso that boasts full flavor with less bitterness.
“It’s an artistry,” Gateley said.
There’s one other thing that Kraken Coral & Coffee is focused on: community.
The shop displays several paintings for sale by a local artist, and 100% of the profit from any painting sold goes back to the artist.
“What better way to help out someone in our community?” Gateley said.
Additionally, drip coffee is free for all first responders and military, and all menu items are 25% off.
“As a small business, that’s who you rely on — your community,” Gateley said.
Kraken Coral & Coffee is now open and is located at 868 S. Spokane Street, Post Falls.
