COEUR d'ALENE — North Idaho College received a gift from Shoshone Medical Center last week.
Shoshone Medical CEO Paul Lewis said the hospital has been working on how to donate its old portable X-ray machine to NIC's radiography technology program.
"We have a new portable unit at SMC, and it’s a good opportunity to partner with NIC so students can train on equipment similar to what they will be using in their professional field," Lewis said. "They do a great job with future health care professionals, and this is a fantastic opportunity to support the education of the next generation of health care heroes."
NIC radiography program director Matthew Nolan said the portable X-ray machine is fully functional and will provide enhanced learning opportunities for students.
Practicing procedures on a portable device offers more experience for the students to collect patient information in a variety of ways.
"Our job in education is to prepare students to be competent and functional wherever they go. Having this different piece of equipment allows us to teach critical thinking skills," Nolan said.
SMC staff are also excited to utilize their new portable X-ray machine for improved imaging for patients.
"This amazing technology is a game changer for our patients who can’t leave their beds, allowing us to capture clear and precise images right where they are," Lewis said.
