PREP BASKETBALL: Priest River boys down St. Maries for regular season CIL title
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 4 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | February 18, 2025 9:45 PM
Priest River 62, St. Maries 50
PRIEST RIVER — Senior Palmer Coleman recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists and the host Spartans captured the regular season 3A Central Idaho League title in what was a memorable senior night win over the Lumberjacks on Tuesday.
Senior Carter Cook recorded a team-high 12 points and senior Nate Stifel had 11 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks for Priest River, which led by as much as 17 points late in the fourth quarter.
"He's really excelled and improved from the start of the season," Priest River High head coach Kevin Wylie said of Stifel. "He's a big problem for a lot of teams, all-around."
Senior Sawyer Staudt registered 10 points, including two 3-pointers, three assists and three steals and was a menace on the defensive front as the Spartans got out to a 32-23 lead by the time intermission rolled around.
"Tonight really started with Sawyer's energy during our full-court press, diving on loose balls, being active, and forcing turnovers," coach Wylie said. "When that happened, everyone else stepped up and we really did an awesome job as a group."
It's the Spartans first regular season league title since 2021, when they won what was then called the 3A Intermountain League. That year? Also the last year Wylie was the head coach of Priest River High boys' hoops before he returned to the job this season.
Wylie said it's a good feeling to bring home the regular season title in his first year back — but the Spartans have their eyes set on the district title, which they also last won under his tenure in 2021. They certainly have the squad and the coaching staff to accomplish just that.
"As deep as we are, when everyone gets involved, scoring, defense — anything like that helps our team gets these wins; it's really huge," coach Wylie said. "Our offense was well-balanced and our defense was a point of emphasis over the week leading up to this game, knowing we had to win to secure the league title."
With the win, Priest River effectively ended St. Maries' 10-year regular season league title streak.
Senior Brock Kreager added eight points, including two 3-pointers, and junior Ian Lamanna had a crucial six points off the bench for Priest River (14-4, 7-1), which will travel to Timberlake for their regular season finale Thursday.

Roos leads Bulldogs to upset of Bengals
Sandpoint 46, Lewiston 43
SANDPOINT — Logan Roos was not to be messed with on Tuesday night.
The Sandpoint High junior posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds and came away with three steals, all team-high's, and the host Bulldogs knocked off Lewiston, ranked No. 3 in 5A, for an Inland Empire League win in their regular season finale.
"We showed some toughness and grit tonight that helped us get over the top," Sandpoint High head coach Brian Childs said. "Logan rebounded really well for us."
Junior Kingston Corbett had nine points, junior Emerik Jones also had nine and dished out a game-high four assists for Sandpoint, which led 28-20 at intermission. Sophomore Knox Williams had six points, all from 3-point range, and sophomore Derrick Chamberlain, in his second game since returning from injury, also tallied six — his first six points of the season.
"Derrick's getting more comfortable, better every game," coach Childs said. "He did a good job defensively in the fourth quarter... he can guard one through five. Having him back on the floor gives us another option."
Junior Royce Fisher recorded a game-high 20 points and hit four of Lewiston's seven 3-pointers on the night. The Bengals had 13 3-pointers in the last meeting between these two teams on Jan. 24, in which Lewiston won 72-45. It's Sandpoint's first win over Lewiston since the 2019-2020 season.
"Every time they had an opportunity to cut into the lead or tie it with a 3... we responded," coach Childs said. "We were pretty good defensively tonight. To give up 43 points to a team that shoots the ball that well — we answered the bell on the defensive end. It was a good team win and we got contributions from a lot of guys."
No. 2 Sandpoint look to stay hot when they host No. 3 Lakeland this Friday for a 5A IEL district tournament loser-out game at Les Rogers Court.
