Kaye Hinnenkamp Ellis, 78, born on June 6, 1946, in Melrose, Minnesota, passed away on Jan. 27, 2025, leaving a legacy of love, kindness, and compassion. A woman of great character and strength, Kaye's life was marked by her unwavering dedication to helping others and her joy for life's adventures.

Kaye was the daughter of Ervin "Ervie" and Esther Bringe Hinnenkamp and was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her brother, Randy Hinnenkamp and her sister, Shirley Vogel.

She is survived by her sister, Ruth Hinnenkamp; her husband, Bill Ellis; daughter, Anne Herzog; stepchildren, Paul Ellis and Tracey-Lee Ellis; and her cherished grandchildren, Keaton, Gabriel, Nevaeh, Ezra, Ryan, Sophie and Alex. She was also a beloved aunt, especially to her nephew, Kirk Vogel.

Kaye’s career spanned 40 years with the U.S. Forest Service, where she made countless friends while doing contracting work. Her commitment to service extended far beyond her professional life, as she volunteered her time to numerous charities and was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, where her faith was an important part of who she was.

Those who knew Kaye will remember her for her warm, caring nature and her ability to bring joy to every room she entered. She had a unique, often sarcastic sense of humor that could brighten anyone’s day. She called it a “warped” sense of humor. She was always quick to offer a kind word, a smile, or a helping hand. Kaye’s devotion to others was truly unparalleled, and she spent much of her life standing up for those whose voices went unheard. She believed in justice and protection for the vulnerable, never tolerating violence or abuse, regardless of the strength of the aggressor. Her advocacy for others was close to her heart, and organizations like the Abbey Shelter and local animal shelters held a special place in her life.

Kaye was a keen card player who loved nothing more than gathering with family and friends for a friendly game. Whether it was a simple game at home or a more competitive round, her love for cards was a reflection of her playful and engaging spirit.

An avid traveler and lover of the outdoors, Kaye embraced every opportunity to explore the world around her. She hiked the stunning landscapes of New Zealand and Glacier National Park, always ready for the next adventure. She never liked being idle and was always looking for her next journey. Nature, the ocean, and the beauty of the world were her passions.

Kaye’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her kindness, strength, and zest for life were truly remarkable. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

A memorial service to celebrate Kaye’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on March 13, at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish. All are welcome to attend and share in the remembrance of a woman who touched so many lives with love and laughter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish, the Abbey Shelter, or your local animal shelter in Kaye’s honor.
